PoliProof: Gamifying Knowledge and Fighting Misinformation

Inspiration

In an age where misinformation spreads rapidly on social media, the ability to critically engage with facts has never been more important. PoliProof was inspired by the need for a fun, interactive, and meaningful way to improve one's knowledge on critical political, social, and economic topics while also providing users with a tangible way to prove their credibility. The core idea was to empower users to test and showcase their understanding of key issues through gamified learning, while simultaneously creating a metric—the Ethos Meter—that establishes their credibility when participating in discussions online.

PoliProof is more than just a quiz platform; it’s a tool to enhance personal knowledge, encourage accountability, and help foster informed conversations, especially on social media. By giving users an engaging way to "earn their ethos," PoliProof aspires to make education accessible and misinformation less pervasive.

What It Does

PoliProof is a real-time, interactive quiz platform that:

  1. Challenges Users: Players compete in live quizzes on a variety of topics, racing to answer faster and more accurately than their opponents.
  2. Builds Knowledge: Questions are designed to be informative, providing explanations and references after each round to deepen understanding.
  3. Provides Credibility: Users earn an Ethos Meter score, a dynamic metric reflecting their expertise on specific topics. This score can be shared on social media to establish credibility in debates or discussions.
  4. Tracks Progress: Users can view their progress, identify areas for improvement, and gain insights into their learning journey.

PoliProof transforms education into an enjoyable and competitive experience while tackling the broader challenge of combating misinformation.

How We Built It

PoliProof was developed using a combination of modern technologies:

  • Frontend: React Native, Expo, and TypeScript were used to build an intuitive mobile interface that supports user authentication, live quiz participation, and performance tracking.
  • Backend: Node.js with Express handled API requests, session management, and quiz logic. WebSocket integration enabled real-time communication, crucial for live quiz battles.
  • Database: MySQL was chosen for its reliability in managing structured data, including user profiles, quiz questions, and Ethos Meter scores.
  • Real-Time Functionality: WebSockets powered the dynamic updates required for live quizzes, ensuring players receive synchronized questions and instant score updates.

The development process involved careful planning and rapid iteration to deliver a functional and engaging product within the hackathon's constraints.

Challenges We Ran Into

Building PoliProof came with several technical and logistical challenges:

  1. Real-Time Communication: Integrating WebSockets for live quiz functionality required extensive debugging to ensure seamless communication between players.
  2. Time Constraints: The hackathon's limited timeframe necessitated prioritizing essential features while maintaining quality.
  3. Ethos Meter Design: Defining a fair and meaningful credibility scoring system was complex, requiring consideration of factors like accuracy, speed, and topic difficulty.
  4. User Authentication: Ensuring secure and user-friendly authentication while protecting sensitive data required meticulous attention to detail.

Despite these hurdles, the process strengthened our problem-solving abilities and pushed us to think creatively under pressure.
