Polinder 🗳️

Politics / Politician + Tinder Agenda-based voting assistant for Nepal’s March 5 Election

📌 Overview

Polinder is a civic-tech application designed to help voters make issue-driven political decisions rather than choices based on personality, rhetoric, or generational loyalty. By aligning a user’s policy preferences with political party agendas, Polinder promotes informed, reflective, and stable democratic participation.

Initially scoped for Nepal’s March 5 election, Polinder serves as an assistive tool—not a recommendation engine—to help voters understand where they stand politically and how closely political parties align with their values.

💡 Inspiration

In Nepal, voting behavior is often influenced by emotional narratives, charismatic leaders, and historical party loyalty. This weakens accountability and makes voters vulnerable to manipulation.

The best-case democracy is one where citizens vote based on issues and agendas they genuinely support. Polinder was inspired by the absence of a neutral, accessible platform that helps Nepali voters:

  • Clarify their own political priorities
  • Compare party agendas objectively
  • Reduce noise-driven decision-making

🚀 What Polinder Does

  • Presents users with policy cards covering key political issues
  • Users swipe left, right, up, or down to express disagreement, agreement, or intensity
  • Each swipe updates a real-time matching score with major political parties
  • Party stances are derived from:

    • Previous election manifestos
    • Latest central committee decisions
  • After completing all policy cards, users can:

    • View party-wise matching scores
    • See policy alignments and misalignments
    • Compare political parties across specific issues
  • Displays a countdown and reminder for the upcoming election

  • Generates a personalized Political DNA using Gemini-powered AI

  • Allows users to reset and restart at any time

Polinder does not tell users whom to vote for—it helps them think clearly before deciding.

🛠️ How We Built It

  • Designed a Tinder-style swipe UX to lower friction and encourage honest responses
  • Curated politically differentiable issues, excluding agendas where all parties largely agree
  • Encoded party stances manually using verified public sources
  • Implemented a weighted scoring algorithm to calculate ideological proximity
  • Integrated Gemini AI to interpret user behavior and generate Political DNA summaries
  • Architected the system to support future automation and regional expansion

⚠️ Challenges We Ran Into

  • Political parties had not released updated manifestos for the current election
  • Many political issues lacked clear ideological contrast
  • Translating complex policy positions into simple, swipeable cards
  • Maintaining neutrality while still delivering meaningful insight
  • Defining fair scoring logic for subjective political agreement

🏆 Accomplishments We’re Proud Of

  • Converted abstract political ideology into an intuitive and engaging experience
  • Built a tool that counters personality-driven political manipulation
  • Demonstrated that civic engagement tools can be both serious and user-friendly
  • Created a scalable foundation for South Asian democracies

📚 What We Learned

  • Voters engage deeply when tools respect their time and intelligence
  • Political neutrality depends on transparent methodology, not silence
  • UX design strongly shapes how users express political beliefs
  • Agenda-based voting can be encouraged through interaction, not instruction

🔮 What’s Next for Polinder

  • Automate party stance updates using Gemini AI from speeches, press releases, and policy documents
  • Expand to India, Bangladesh, and other South Asian countries
  • Add regional and local-issue customization
  • Introduce post-election accountability tracking
  • Collaborate with civic organizations to promote issue-based voting culture

⚖️ Disclaimer

Polinder is an assistive civic tool, not a political endorsement platform. All scores are indicative and intended to support informed decision-making.

✨ Vision

If even a small percentage of voters shift from personality-based to agenda-based voting, the long-term impact on political stability and governance could be transformative.

Polinder aims to be that quiet shift.
