Inspiration
Last year, in our own school, three huge physical fights occurred. Panic rose and people were worried, and we decided to make an app that makes people feel safer.
What it does
Polaris allowed students to feel like their school is a safe, accepting environment. Our app takes security to another level, by working fast to detect any abnormal movements in school hallways, etc and alerting trusted staff members. This way, fights can be prevented and make students feel safer.
How we built it
We used our knowledge on HTML and Python and important libraries such as CV2 (for live detection) and Flask. We had AI help with debugging when we ran into some errors.
Challenges we ran into
At first, our image detection wasn't accurate and didn't always detect the fighting movement.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We pushed through and made our app and image detection feature functional to the best of our knowledge.
What we learned
We learned how to fix errors and code to the best of our ability without heavily depending on AI.
What's next for Polaris
We want to incorporate the live detection feature into actual CCTV cameras at schools, so our app can make an impact.
