Inspiration
Originally we were interested in smart-home technology, but we realized that all the hardware we would have needed is available in a smart phone and more convenient that way. Part of the inspiration stemmed from my bad habit of buying too much food when I go grocery shopping and then not using it before it goes bad, so we wanted to address that issue in a simple, non-intrusive way - via technology people carry in their pockets.
What it does
Polar Bear allows the user to scan bar codes/QR codes on food labels and choose whether they will be stored at room temperature, in a refrigerator or in a freezer. In most cases, the information needed is determined using the barcode scanner but in some cases must come directly from the user. This includes the expiration date of the food.
Polar Bear keeps track of the food in the users home and suggests recipes that the user can make with food in their home so that they a. don't buy more ingredients than they need and b. use the food they have before it goes bad.
How we built it
Challenges we ran into
Creating a method for determining expiration date: one of the two people on this team had no prior experience with java so creating a program to load, read, and search a JSON file was a large challenge. Also, simply determining the expiration dates was tedious and there was no simple way to write a program to calculate those dates.

What we learned
That just because you don't know something doesn't mean you cant learn.
