Inspiration

It started from a Tiktok video by a teacher/part-time Twitch streamer that showed himself using Twitch extensions to create an interactive classroom for his students. This inspired us to create a more user-friendly platform that allows any teacher to create an interactive virtual classroom to overcome the challenges of keeping younger students engaged in online classes.

The problem/need/opportunity:

A recent survey of participating San Antonio schools showed that 64% of young students were less engaged during online learning. Participation is difficult to encourage in online settings, and many students -- both old and young -- have noted that learning is more challenging virtually.

What it does

Pokemon Teaching Center (PTC) is a tool for teachers to utilize during online classes to increase student participation and motivation. PTC fosters teamwork by encouraging students to work together to gain experience points in order to grow their class Pokemon. PTC also has features that allow the Pokemon to learn commands, evolve, greet students, and customize per class period.

We are proud that we were able to make a user-friendly interface with hand-made designs that appeal to younger students.

Next steps:

It is to add expanded features as seen in our Figma:
Pokemon selection screen! With different kinds of Pokemons to unlock -- including legendaries
Pokemon evolutions dictated by the XP gain of different classes/progress over the course of a semester
More abilities to customize your Pokemon actions and what they talk about!
Add students to periods, put in XP goals, and see statistics for participation

Why we are different from others:

Best of both worlds: online learning through the embedding of teaching material on dashboard plus the fun of Twitch characters and goal getting. Participation in a virtual classroom has never been this exciting!
Participation is key: the more students that finish their work and interact with the teacher, the faster the Pokemon's XP bar fills up. More XP means the faster you are to seeing your Pokemon's evolve!
