Inspiration
The idea came from my own spending habits. I'd often save for something expensive, a laptop, headphones, or an iPhone, but still question whether I was buying at the right time. Sometimes I'd miss annual sales, buy just before a product refresh, or underestimate how the purchase would affect my savings over the following months. So I came up with this idea of building an app that tells people the smartest time to buy their wished-for products.
What it does
Poise is a smart spending assistant that helps users make intentional purchasing decisions instead of simply tracking expenses. Users build a wishlist of future purchases while maintaining a financial baseline that includes income, savings, fixed expenses, financing obligations, and personal risk tolerance. For every item, Poise evaluates: affordability over time, projected cash runway, historical price trends, financing commitments, personalized risk thresholds
and produces one of three recommendations: Ready, Wait, Not Yet
Rather than showing a static recommendation, Poise estimates a personalized buying window where financial risk is minimized.
There is also an AI box for "other items" but still under development.
How I built it
I built Poise as a full-stack web application using React, TypeScript, JavaScript, Convex, and Google Cloud Platform.
Challenges I ran into
Learning to implement backends and data flows among different pages. (Also making a good logo :)
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Beyond implementing the frontend, I built the backend architecture, authentication flow, reactive data model, and recommendation engine while also designing the product's branding and user experience. And this is something that I will genuinely use in my life after I deploy it!
