Inspiration

We saw a world where health apps were either too serious, too clinical, or just plain boring — and people everywhere, especially the young, lost interest fast. What if, we wondered, keeping healthy was as thrilling as an adventure game? Drawing on research in sociology and psychology, we realized that fun alone isn’t enough—the act of “play” must connect people, strengthen community, and promote real-world well-being. So, we built PokeQuest: a joyful hybrid of gaming and health, where collecting Pokémon cards, doing mini-missions, and competing with friends turns every small act of healthy living into a story worth celebrating.

But our quest wasn’t just for fun...
Inspired by the drive for sustainable communities, we decided to embed real-world impact at the core. What if, for example, picking up litter, planting a tree, or doing a neighborhood cleanup not only furthers your in-game journey but also earns you rewards, teaches the true health benefits of sustainability, and helps your city stay safer from outbreaks? Through challenges and quests, PokeQuest players build not just their own health, but healthier, cleaner, more resilient communities.

What it does

PokeQuest makes the quest for better health and a better world incredibly fun:

  • 🌱 Promotes sustainability: Daily eco-friendly challenges (like cleaning up a park or reducing waste upload picture of doing that ) reward players in-game and deliver real positive impact for their community.
  • 🌎 Keeps you safe: Real-time location-based outbreak info and health alerts, right on the map — so users can be “Trainers” who protect themselves and their world.
  • 🎮 Health = Adventure: Each small health task becomes a mission. Complete tasks, quizzes, or real-world cleanups; catch Pokémon cards and watch your PokePower soar.
  • 🧠 Learn while you play: Daily health quizzes and mini-challenges are crafted to build real knowledge and healthy lifelong habits, all with instant feedback and rewards.
  • 🏆 Social leaderboards: Track progress, challenge friends, and see who’s making the healthiest and greenest impact!
  • Pokemon theme chatbot to ask any health related doubt and get the most appropriate answer.
  • Available with google translation so anyone can use the website in their local language , voice navigation and read aloud feature and also with colorblind mode .

Custom story example:
Imagine a teen who’s always found health “boring” cannot wait to log on each morning, check for nearby “outbreak” zones on the map (alerted by PokeQuest), then goes out to pick up street litter as part of a sustainability quest—snapping a photo for proof, answering a quick health quiz on pollution and asthma, and earning a rare digital Pokémon card as reward. Later, they see that their efforts helped boost their city’s “Cleanliness Score” on the community leaderboard. Suddenly, staying healthy and making the city better feels like an epic game everyone wants to play.

How we built it

  • Frontend: Built with React and TypeScript for a snappy, modern feel.
  • Design: Tailwind CSS + shadcn/ui power minimalist yet playful UI elements inspired by Pokémon.
  • Gamified Flows: Every page—from “Inventory” to “Catch”—feels like a tiny adventure, thanks to game psychology and intuitive user flows.
  • Responsive: Works everywhere—desktop, tablet, or mobile—so the quest never stops.
  • Community-driven: Features like photo uploads for sustainability tasks and real-time leaderboard rankings foster friendly competition and social good.

Challenges we ran into

  • Merging fun and real-world impact: The toughest part was making sure our gamified health experience didn’t lose sight of real learning and behavior change. Building a rewards system that genuinely motivates action (not just clicks) was a true journey in behavioral science and social motivation.
  • Ensuring inclusivity: We wanted everyone, from kids to grandparents, to feel part of the quest—demanding constant UX tweaks and fresh content.
  • Integrating live, accurate outbreak and health data: Making these features meaningful and privacy-safe involved extra engineering and social trust considerations.
  • Adaptability: Balancing the thrill of Pokémon with meaningful health and sustainability education (not making one overshadow the other).

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Transformed health and sustainability into a joyful, habit-forming adventure.
  • Developed a user flow that feels like “a story, not a chore.” Users keep coming back, not just for rewards, but for the feeling of progress and impact.
  • Created social good at scale: PokeQuest motivates hundreds of real-world eco-actions, and every action is mapped and celebrated.
  • Seamlessly blended health, sociology, psychology, and gaming for a lasting experience.

What we learned

  • Fun is a powerful motivator, but when combined with social impact and meaning, you unlock truly lasting engagement.
  • Good design is universal language: A joyful, accessible interface draws in every demographic and sustains usage.
  • Behavioral change is a game of small wins: Tiny achievements—whether a new card or a real-world cleanup—are what build healthy habits and a healthy world.
  • Diversity and teamwork fuel innovation: Our best insights came from blending skills, backgrounds, and swapping stories of what “healthy” and “fun” mean.

What's next for PokeQuest

  • Expanding sustainability quests: Reward users for more real-world good—from eco surveys to local tree-plantings—with new cards and badges.
  • Deeper community integration: Partner with schools, clubs, and civic groups to make PokeQuest a city-wide movement.
  • Mobile app launch: Real-time push notifications for nearby outbreaks, up-to-date sustainability missions, and quick access anywhere.
  • Open data collaboration: Bring together live outbreak feeds, community-reported hazards, and even weather alerts to keep users informed, healthy, and empowered.
  • Continuous learning: Constantly update quiz topics, stories, and quests to match new health and community needs.

With PokeQuest, healthy living becomes the world’s most exciting cooperative game, blending technology, psychology, and sustainability—for the well-being of every user and every city.
