Inspiration
Originally intended to be a platform to strictly share apartments where other people could vote on your apartment, the idea grew to be a general competition platform for people to join communities and share what makes them great.
What it does
Provides an interface to create and participate in competitions in any category you like, whether it be best outfit, best decorated car, or snazziest apartment. The post with the most likes wins, and resets every week so that posts are fresh and up to date, allowing for constant excitement and engagement with a vast range of competitors.
How we built it
Made with Swift, the backend was made using Firebase, and authentication was done using FirebaseAuth
Challenges we ran into
Being our first mobile app, and not having come with an idea already in mind, we used over 8 hours simply coming up with an idea, and expanding on its functionality. We then ran into much trouble with the authentication process for the login, although we have overcome that hurdle and have moved onto developing the meat and potatoes of our brain child.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We were proud that we were able to figure out how to set up the authentication and database, seeing as neither one of us have much experience in mobile development. We've had to learn a lot of documentation to achieve our goals, but we're optimistic that we'll be able to deliver a great product.
What we learned
We learned how to effectively draft an app idea, and have learned from our process which took longer than we should have which will allow us to more quickly iterate in coming hackathons. We learned how to read documentation and how to set up a backend for a mobile application.
What's next for Podium
We plan on developing the ui, and the backend. From there we would love to spread the idea around campus, as we think it would be very fun to have a friendly competition platform, which users could make their own custom competitions on for sporting events, clubs, or just personal activities. We think it coudl be very popular, and are excited to move forward with it.
