Inspiration

As a busy tech executive, I’d pile up podcasts but never finish them—missing key takeaways amid a packed schedule. I wanted a tool to distill hours of audio into bite-sized, actionable insights that fit into my 2-minute coffee breaks. That’s how PodcastSummary Agent was born: for professionals like me who crave knowledge without the time commitment.

What it does

It turns any Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or RSS podcast link into a structured 2-minute summary—complete with key quotes, actionable tips, and recommended resources—all generated in under 60 seconds. Users save summaries to a searchable library, subscribe to daily digests, and upgrade for unlimited access.

How we built it

We started with core UX design to prioritize simplicity: a clean input flow, real-time processing feedback, and responsive layout for mobile/desktop. We built the frontend with React, backend with Node.js/Express, used Firebase for auth, PostgreSQL for library storage, and integrated Stripe for Premium billing.

Challenges we ran into

The biggest hurdle was balancing speed and depth—ensuring summaries were concise (2-minute read) but still captured the podcast’s essence. We also struggled with seamless URL validation across three platforms (Spotify, Apple, RSS) and making the free/premium quota logic intuitive for users.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We created a tool that solves a real pain point for busy professionals—beta users report saving 5+ hours/month on podcast consumption. The responsive design works flawlessly across devices, and the library’s search functionality makes archived insights easy to find.

What we learned

We learned that user-centric design trumps feature bloat: our initial draft had 10+ features, but cutting to core value (fast summaries, searchable library) made the product stickier. We also mastered API integration best practices for third-party podcast platforms and subscription-based monetization logic.

What's next for this project

We’re adding priority processing for Premium users, expanding support for more podcast platforms, and refining the daily digest to let users curate their favorite shows. Long-term, we’ll integrate audio clip extraction to pair summaries with key podcast moments.
