Inspiration
As a lifelong podcast lover, I grew frustrated with disjointed tools—finding great shows felt random, playback lacked control, and creators had no easy way to connect with their audience. I wanted to build a hub that put listeners first, while empowering the creators who make the content we love.
What it does
Podcast Discovery is a all-in-one platform for podcast fans and creators. Listeners get personalized recommendations, full playback control (speed, sleep timers, skip silence), offline downloads, and community discussions. Creators access analytics, feedback management, and monetization tools to grow their channels.
How we built it
We started with core UX/UI design in Figma, mapping user flows for discovery and playback. The frontend was built with React and TypeScript (Vite for bundling), using TailwindCSS for responsive design. Chart.js powered analytics dashboards, and we integrated audio plugins to handle playback features. Firebase provided lightweight storage for user libraries and playlists.
Challenges we ran into
The biggest hurdle was perfecting the playback experience—balancing custom controls (like skip silence) with smooth performance across devices. We also struggled with designing intuitive category filtering that felt natural, not clunky, for casual browsing.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We created a seamless global player that persists across the platform, a personalized recommendation system that adapts to listening habits, and a creator dashboard that distills complex analytics into actionable insights. The dark/light mode toggle and responsive design work flawlessly on mobile and desktop.
What we learned
We deepened our understanding of audio web APIs, responsive design for media-heavy UIs, and user-centric design for two distinct user groups (listeners/creators). Most importantly, we learned that prioritizing small, impactful features (like 15s rewind) makes a huge difference in user satisfaction.
What's next for this project
We plan to add live episode Q&As, expand monetization options for creators (like direct listener tips), and integrate cross-platform sync (phone/desktop). We also want to grow the community features—adding user-curated playlists and podcast meetup events.
