PocketWyse - AI Finance for Low Wage Workers

Inspiration

The inspiration for PocketWyse came from recognizing a critical gap in financial services: while high-net-worth individuals have easy access to financial advisors, millions of low-wage workers struggle to access basic financial guidance. I observed that many hardworking individuals make financial decisions without proper advice or support, often leading to suboptimal outcomes that perpetuate cycles of financial instability.

The stark reality that nearly half of the world live paycheck to paycheck, combined with the prohibitive cost of traditional financial advisory services, drove us to create a solution that democratizes access to financial wisdom. I was particularly moved by stories of individuals working multiple jobs yet struggling to build savings or manage debt effectively, simply due to a lack of accessible financial guidance.

What it does

PocketWyse serves as a comprehensive AI-powered financial companion that brings professional-grade financial advice to everyone's pocket. The application offers:

A sophisticated Balance Sheet Analysis system that provides instant insights into users' financial health by analyzing their income, expenses, and spending patterns. This helps users understand their financial position and identify areas for improvement.

An interactive Scenario Planning tool that enables users to visualize different financial futures. Users can explore how changes in their saving habits, expenses, or income might affect their long-term financial health, making abstract financial concepts more tangible and actionable.

Personalized Goal Tracking features that help users set realistic financial objectives and monitor their progress. The system provides adaptive recommendations to keep users on track toward their goals, adjusting strategies based on changing circumstances.

A 24/7 AI Assistant that answers financial questions in plain language, making complex financial concepts accessible to everyone. This feature provides immediate, personalized guidance without the need to schedule appointments or pay consulting fees.

How I built it

I developed PocketWyse using a modern tech stack designed for scalability and accessibility:

The core AI functionality is powered by large language models fine-tuned on financial advisory data, ensuring accurate and contextual responses to user queries. I implemented strict guardrails to ensure the advice remains within appropriate bounds.

For the backend, I created a robust Javascript-based API service that handles data processing, financial calculations, and AI model interactions. I paid special attention to data security, implementing end-to-end encryption for all sensitive financial information.

The frontend was built using React and TypeScript, allowing us to deploy across both iOS, Android and Web platforms while maintaining a simple feel. I focused heavily on creating an intuitive interface that works well for users with varying levels of technical and financial literacy.

I integrated voice recognition capabilities using Speech-To-Text by Google, making the app accessible to users who prefer verbal interaction or have difficulty with text input.

Challenges I ran into

Developing PocketWyse presented several significant challenges:

Ensuring the accuracy and reliability of AI-generated financial advice was our biggest hurdle. I had to carefully balance providing helpful guidance while avoiding any recommendations that could be considered formal financial advice requiring licensing.

Creating an inclusive user experience that works for people with different financial literacy levels required multiple iterations. I had to simplify complex financial concepts without losing their essential meaning.

Implementing robust security measures while maintaining app performance was challenging, especially considering the sensitive nature of financial data.

Building effective multi-language support required more than simple translation - I had to account for different financial systems and cultural approaches to money management across regions.

Accomplishments that I'm proud of

Despite the challenges, I achieved several noteworthy accomplishments:

Successfully developed an AI system that provides reliable, practical financial guidance while maintaining appropriate boundaries around formal financial advice.

Created an intuitive user interface that received positive feedback from users across different age groups and financial literacy levels during beta testing.

Implemented a secure system for handling sensitive financial data that meets industry standards for data protection.

Developed a scalable architecture that can handle thousands of concurrent users while maintaining response times under 200ms.

Built effective multi-language support that accounts for regional financial differences and cultural nuances.

What I learned

This project provided valuable lessons in multiple areas:

The complexity of making financial advice accessible while ensuring it remains accurate and helpful taught us the importance of careful system design and thorough testing.

Working with users from different financial backgrounds helped us understand the vast diversity in financial literacy levels and the need for flexible, adaptive solutions.

Developing secure systems for handling financial data gave us deeper insight into financial technology security requirements and best practices.

The importance of user testing in creating truly accessible applications - many of our initial assumptions about user needs and preferences were challenged and refined through user feedback.

What's next for PocketWyse

Looking forward, I have several exciting developments planned:

Integration with major financial institutions to provide real-time transaction analysis and more accurate financial insights.

Development of community features where users can share financial goals and success stories while maintaining privacy.

Implementation of more sophisticated AI models to provide even more personalized financial guidance.

Expansion of educational content to include interactive financial literacy modules.

Partnership development with financial counseling organizations to provide a pathway for users who need professional human guidance.

Addition of gamification elements to make financial planning more engaging and rewarding.
