What Inspired Us

At the start of the new year, we saw a lot of new faces at the gym. Many of these people were eager to start their fitness journeys but didn’t know they were using bad form during their workouts. This is a common problem, especially for beginners, and it can lead to injuries and slow progress. We wanted to help by creating a tool that could give people quick feedback on their form to help them stay safe and get better results.

What We Learned

This was our team’s first big hackathon, so we learned a lot in the 24 hours we had. We got hands-on experience using OpenCV and MediaPipe to analyze video and detect key points on the body. We also learned how to organize our project better with a Kanban board and work together on GitHub, making sure everyone’s changes were tracked. It was challenging, but we gained a lot of new skills and knowledge about both coding and teamwork.

How We Built The Project

We focused on common exercises that people often get wrong, like squats, bicep curls, and bench presses. For each of these exercises, we researched the best form and created a system to check if someone’s form was correct or if they were making mistakes. We used OpenCV and MediaPipe to track the person’s body movements through video, compare them to the ideal form, and give feedback on how to improve.

Challenges We Faced

One of our biggest challenges was that the model we built was too large to deploy easily. It was hard to run the model with live video feeds within our budget and without running into performance issues. We had to come up with creative solutions to work around these problems, like simplifying the model or changing how we handled video input. It wasn’t always smooth sailing, but we found ways to make things work and ended up with a working prototype.

Summary

This project was a great learning experience for all of us. It taught us new technical skills, helped us get better at working as a team, and gave us the chance to solve a real-world problem with technology. We’re proud of what we accomplished and excited to take on more challenges in the future.
