Inspiration
We were inspired by the popularity increase in handheld portable gaming devices , and for human's love and attachments to their pets.
What it does
The project simulates having a virtual pet and being able to interact with it by feeding it, cleaning after it, and petting it.
How I built it
We built it using a raspberry pi pico interfaced with an LCD. SDK's were provided by the manufacturers to aid in developing for both of the devices. We also added in our own game design/game engine that will run the actual features we have for the project.
Challenges I ran into
One of the bigger challenges we ran into was due to understanding how to display our own custom pixel art images to the display. The had several abstraction layers that we had to research and understand. We also ran into game loop design issues in properly simulating the pet interactions. Due to our group skill level, much of the time was taken by researching and learning.
Accomplishments that I'm proud of
Getting our actual image to be shown was euphoric.
What I learned
We mainly learned embedded software programming which include familiarity uControllers and embedded systems, and a basic understanding of circuit design and electronic components.
What's next for PocketPals
Expanding the pet selection, better portability, making 3D printed enclosure, and add buttons.
