Inspiration

Early-career software engineers and newly minted engineering managers frequently run into a silent career blocker: high-friction workplace communication. Whether it is pushing back on an impossible 4-day delivery sprint, giving upward critical feedback to leadership, or defending tech-debt refactoring against feature creep, junior professionals often react passively or defensively. We built PocketMentor to give tech talent a safe, interactive simulator to build executive presence, manage boundaries, and practice high-stakes professional dialogue before stepping into real meetings.

What it does

PocketMentor is an interactive executive communication coach with a built-in subscription model powered by RevenueCat:

  • Real-World Engineering Scenarios: Practice situations ranging from scope creep pushback to communicating critical feedback upward.
  • Multi-Dimensional Diagnostics: Analyzes user responses across three distinct leadership indices: Assertiveness, Diplomacy, and Clarity, rather than a vague overall score.
  • Staff-Level Alternative Scripts: Provides actionable critiques and generates an executive rewrite showing how a Staff Engineer or Director would frame the exact boundary.
  • Local Session Tracking: Persists session histories and progress logs locally so users can measure communication improvements over time.
  • RevenueCat Monetization Architecture: Gates advanced executive scenarios behind a pro entitlement with dynamic Monthly and Lifetime tier offerings.

How we built it

  • Mobile & Web Frontend: Developed using React Native with Expo and TypeScript, styled with a modern dark-matte executive aesthetic.
  • Monetization Engine (RevenueCat): Integrated react-native-purchases utilizing RevenueCat's Test Store configuration. Dynamic packages are fetched directly from RevenueCat Offerings and gate access via the active pro entitlement.
  • Persistence & State: Local-first session logging and progress persistence powered by @react-native-async-storage/async-storage.
  • Diagnostic Evaluator: Multi-vector rubric analyzer scoring contextual boundaries, constructive compromise proposals, and objective data-grounded framing.

Challenges we ran into

  • Cross-Platform Purchase Abstraction: Handling the differences between native mobile sandbox environments and web preview builds required creating a resilient RevenueCat service layer with graceful sandbox fallbacks so the app could be demonstrated without build crashes.
  • Designing a Commercial-Grade Paywall: Structuring a paywall that felt native, clear, and value-driven rather than an intrusive roadblock. We focused heavily on clear tier comparisons, prominent feature value propositions, and dynamic pricing strings.
  • Balancing Diagnostic Feedback: Creating an evaluation algorithm that rewards constructive boundary setting rather than just long, polite, or overly passive answers.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

  • Wiring a clean, complete RevenueCat purchase lifecycle with dynamic offerings and instant entitlement checking.
  • Designing a focused 2-screen mobile experience with zero visual clutter and immediate user utility.
  • Implementing multi-metric feedback that delivers practical, staff-level communication advice in seconds.

What we learned

  • How RevenueCat decouples product catalog management from app releases, making pricing experiments and entitlement gating seamless.
  • How critical the first-time paywall experience is: highlighting specific tangible benefits (like Staff-level rewrites) dramatically clarifies user value.

What's next for PocketMentor – AI Executive Communication Coach

  • Live Audio Voice Roleplay: Integrating low-latency voice-to-voice simulation so users can practice speaking under pressure rather than typing.
  • Team & Enterprise Tiers: Expanding RevenueCat subscription tiers to support engineering team licenses and bootcamps.
  • Custom Scenario Builder: Enabling users to paste their own real-world Slack threads or email chains for personalized executive rewrites.
