Inspiration

The inspiration for Pocket Estate came from noticing how stressful and disorganized property management can be, especially for small or independent landlords who don’t have access to expensive management systems. Many landlords juggle spreadsheets, messages, receipts, and reminders across different platforms, which makes it easy to lose track of payments, maintenance requests, or lease details. We wanted to create a simple but powerful tool that brings everything into one place so landlords can stay organized, save time, and manage their properties with confidence. We also wanted to include an AI assistant that acts like a smart property manager, helping automate tasks, answer questions, and streamline communication.

What it does

Pocket Estate is an all-in-one property management platform that helps landlords manage properties, tenants, finances, and maintenance from a single dashboard. Users can add properties, upload documents, track leases, record rent payments, and monitor expenses such as utilities, repairs, and taxes. The app generates financial reports, profit-and-loss summaries, and cash-flow projections so landlords can clearly understand their property performance. Tenants can submit maintenance requests, upload documents, and receive notifications or reminders. A built-in AI assistant can send messages, update tenants, identify overdue payments, and answer questions about property data. The app also includes light and dark mode for a more comfortable user experience.

How we built it

We built Pocket Estate by combining our different academic strengths so each of us could contribute meaningfully to the project. Shaneil, whose major is computer science, handled the technical development, coding structure, and logic behind key systems like tenant tracking, payment recording, and automation features. Adaugo, a marketing major, focused on branding, naming the app, and brainstorming features that would make the platform more appealing, user-friendly, and valuable to landlords. Helia, an accounting major, originally came up with the idea and helped in shaping the financial and management features, making sure tools like expense tracking, reports, and cash flow projections were realistic, practical, and useful in real-world property management. We used Gemini to help generate logic and assist with development. By combining technical tools with our different areas of expertise, we were able to create a platform that is both functional and practical for real users.

Challenges we ran into

One challenge we faced was implementing advanced features like the market news section and ROI calculations. At times, development slowed down because of technical issues such as quota limit errors from Gemini, which interrupted progress and required troubleshooting. Another challenge was making sure all systems payments, tenants, leases, and maintenance worked together smoothly without breaking the app’s performance. Balancing multiple complex features while keeping the app user friendly required careful testing and adjustments.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re especially proud of successfully integrating so many management tools into one platform without making it feel complicated. Features like automated late fees, maintenance tracking, document uploads, and financial reporting work together seamlessly, which makes the app feel like a complete property management assistant rather than just a tracker. We’re also proud of the AI assistant feature, which adds a smart, interactive element that can perform tasks and provide insights instantly.

What we learned

Through building Pocket Estate, we learned how complex real world management systems are and how important it is to design software around actual user needs. We gained experience balancing functionality with simplicity, troubleshooting technical limitations, and thinking critically about how different systems interact. We also learned that testing and iteration are essential, because even small features can affect the entire platform.

What's next for Pocket Estate

Next, we want to improve the market insights and ROI features, expand automation tools, and enhance AI capabilities so the assistant can provide deeper financial analysis and smarter recommendations. We also plan to strengthen performance, add more customization options for landlords, and continue refining the interface to make the app even more intuitive. Our long term goal is to turn Pocket Estate into a complete smart management ecosystem for property owners of any scale.
