Inspiration

As young adults, we tend to make purchases impulsively for quick dopamine boosts. We wanted to come up with a solution to curb these impulses and help with our spending and saving habits.

What it does

Our mobile app, Pocket Money, allows users to create personalized budgets and set up short-term saving goals. After creating an account and completing a short questionnaire about finances and spending habits, users will be able to access and edit a dashboard that analyzes and organizes their budgeting. Users also have the option to scan grocery products for a quick and easy addition to their spending budget.

How we built it

The frontend was designed using Figma and React Native. The app interface was tested with Expo Go. The backend used SupaBase for data storage, data management, and user authentication. We used the Gemini API for barcode data retrieval.

Challenges we ran into

We ran into issues with merge conflicts as well as errors with the SupaBase integration. There was also a learning curve with planning and organizing the entire app flow from the start to the finished product.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are very proud of being able to come up with a fully fleshed-out idea, design, and implementation in such a short amount of time. As first-time hackers, it forced us to completely focus and put our technical skills to the ultimate test. It was very rewarding to see our vision come to life and have a finished product to show for.

What we learned

For the majority of us on the team, this was our first time developing a mobile app. We learned a lot about design as well as using new tech stacks. This also allowed us to use React Native to its full potential, exploring the tool for barcode scanning.

What's next for Pocket Money

After SwampHacks, we hope to continue developing the app and adding features such as a wish list, time scalability for the budget graph, and even possibly gamifying the app by adding badges or achievements.
