Inspirational
I created Pocket Mechanic because I know what it’s like to stare at a broken car and feel helpless. Our family car was always breaking down, and we never had the money to fix it. My mom is getting older and needs to be at the hospital often — but without a working car, even getting her there became a struggle.
That’s why I built something the world truly needs: Pocket Mechanic — the first AI-powered auto repair app and social network for car owners. You just enter your car’s make and model to get a full breakdown of parts, step-by-step repair help, and instant diagnoses using photos, sound, or video. But beyond the tech, it’s a community — like Facebook for cars — where people help each other, share knowledge, and support those who can’t always afford a trip to the shop.
This isn’t just an app — it’s a tool for survival, independence, and connection. I built it for people like me. I built it for families like ours. I built it so no one gets left stranded again.
What it does
Pocket Mechanic is an AI-powered auto repair assistant combined with a social platform for car owners. It helps users:
Diagnose car issues using photos, sounds, or videos
Get detailed repair guides based on their car’s make and model
Connect with a global community of mechanics, car lovers, and DIYers
Share fixes, post advice, recommend garages, and showcase their rides
It’s like Chat GPT and Facebook — but made for fixing and understanding cars.
How we built it
We started with a simple idea: put car knowledge in everyone’s pocket. Using AI models trained on thousands of repair manuals, diagnostic sounds, and real-world user input, we built a system that:
Matches symptoms to possible faults
Gives step-by-step guides
Creates a social feed for users to engage, comment, and share
Our prototype is mobile-first, easy to use, and designed for everyday drivers.
Challenges we ran into
Access to quality car repair data was limited — we had to clean and structure messy info
Building accurate sound/image diagnostics with limited resources
Encouraging community interaction in early testing phases
Personal: Coming from a low-income background, it was hard to fund tools, software, and time while caring for my sick mother and keeping our car going
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Built a working demo with real-time diagnostics
Helped 30+ users identify issues with their cars during beta testing
Created a support network of testers from 3 countries
Developed a purpose-driven mission: helping families who can’t afford a mechanic
What we learned
People don’t just want tools — they want connection, trust, and hope
Mobile design must be fast, simple, and offline-ready for those in rural areas
Many users feel helpless around cars — but with the right support, they become confident
