Inspiration

We are passionate about social good and wanted to create a way for community members to learn about and support the small, local non-profit organizations around them. This website serves as a simple way for people to see how much their extra money or “pocket change” can help and impact these organizations.

What it does

Users are able to input how much pocket change they have, where they are located at, and what types of non-profits they are interested in. The website takes this information and provides a list of local non-profit organizations that align with the user's interests, and it also says what the person's pocket change will help fund. Non-profit organizations are also able to fill out a form on the website to be showcased on our website.

How we built it

We designed pocket change in Figma and built the front-end side of the website using React. We also used CockroachDB to store our organizational data.

Challenges we ran into

This was some of our first times at a hackathon, so trying to get the project started was a bit difficult. We had a lot of different ideas and issues that we wanted to tackle, but had to narrow it down to fit the hackathon timeframe. On the developing side, we were also not familiar with this database and had to take some time to learn it.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

An accomplishment we are proud of is the database that we managed to set up. We are also proud of the name "pocket change" for our website and the fact that we were able to have a functioning prototype within a short amount of time.

What we learned

We learned the whole process from start to finish of developing a project. Some of us now realized the difference between front-end and back-end. We also appreciate that we were able to have diversity in our team, as everyone had their own strengths to contribute.

What's next for pocket change

We would love to be able to create a resource list that compiles all of the non-profit organizations that we showcase on our website. Our database is currently empty, so we would want to do some initial research to see what lesser-known non-profit organizations exist that we can include on our website. There is also a lot to do still on the coding side of the project, as we did not have the time to finish.
