This project was inspired by BLM and the desire to support minorities in their business endeavors. Our team is also passionate about supporting actual people instead of large arbitrary corporations whenever possible. We believe that through giving small businesses a platform and a place to offer their unique perspectives we can increase awareness and foster community and connections.
What it does
POCit is our website that was created in order to support small businesses with a special focus on those that are minority owned. In our increasingly digital world, it’s often easier to buy online from larger corporations, which often-times prevents small businesses from establishing a footing in online spaces. Our mission is to establish a platform for these businesses to be discovered, as well as provide a space for consumers to connect with them. It includes features that allow the consumer to learn the stories of these businesses and the perspectives of minority entrepreneurs and foster empathy. This can help the consumer to feel more connected and fulfilled with where they spend their income.
How we built it
We primarily focused on UX with a sprinkle of UI. We used Figma for modeling the site, and created a basic prototype using typescript.
Challenges we ran into
Deploying the website, the research process, lack of experience.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're very proud of the design of the website. It looks professional and aesthetically pleasing. We're also proud of how well we meshed as a team. Our team is compromised of underclassmen and upperclassmen of vastly different skill-sets and experience levels who had never met until this hackathon. We were all able to get along fantastically and make our own unique contributions to make a product that we're proud of.
What we learned
We learned how to collaborate on a project as a team as well as many UX skills. The upperclassmen on our team provided mentor ship on basic UX skills and taught the team how to use software such as Figma.
What's next for POCit
Our website only has its bare-bones. Going forward we would complete a UI to properly deploy the site as well as create a software which allows business owners to create profiles and sell their products.
