Inspiration

Human society is a complex system of interactions within itself and the environment it exists in. Navigating it along the abyss of extinction is a difficult task which requires making sensible compromises. In this simulated universe, it is your task to guide humanity through the dangerous times ahead. Make sure to balance the four factors of enlightenment (prosperity, technology, freedom, and climate) and keep them in balance.

Pay attention! Once they reach 0% or 100% humanity is doomed and we are all lost. This is no easy task as the seemingly best choice can have dire consequences. Good luck friend, you will need it.

What it does

This game simulates a series of decisions which affect the game world in complicated ways. By doing so, the player needs to balance four aspects of the world and try to survive as many years as possible.

How we built it

The project was built from scratch using the Svelte framework with the Vite build system, and deployed it using Vercel. We created all styling and graphics during the event. Images were handcoded in the form of scalable vector graphics (SVGs) and animations were implemented using CSS.

Challenges we ran into

As we hadn't used Svelte/Vite/Vercel before, we had to learn how to use them first. Making Bezier curves in SVGs behave the way we want them to proved to be more complex than anticipated. Coming up with relevant and reasonable storylines requires concentration and creativity.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Writing a visually appealing and responsive prototype with frictionless and minimal UX/UI. Effortless deployment to the cloud. Creating fun yet thought-provoking stories and characters.

What we learned

How to use new exciting javascript frameworks. How to create minimalistic graphical designs. How seemingly obvious solutions to environmental and societal challenges might have unexpected side-effects.

What's next for POCE: Prosperity Over Climate Extinction

Adding more characters and decisions to provide an even deeper gaming experience.
