Inspiration

Why do Terrapin Express, Dining Dollars, and Billpay have to be opened on separate windows just to check their balances? Aren't they all expenses from the same university? Many UMD students have found themselves asking this question, including us. This is why we wanted to build something that makes tracking expenses easy and convenient for busy college students regardless of backgrounds and circumstances.

What it does

Plutos consolidates all of your accounts and expenditures in one place, so all you need is a glance to know how you are spending. You get a summary of your transaction, accounts, and categories of spending all in one window!

How we built it

We used Bootstrap, HTML and CSS for our front end and used JavaScript to handle the dataflow to this page.

Challenges we ran into

Our first challenge was to narrow the scope of the project. At first the idea was very broad and involved many features found in common financial tracking applications, as well as a friend-tracking feature which allowed a user to split costs with friends. However, we realized that we would need to scale back given the timeframe of the hacking period. The other significant challenge was deciding on a framework to use. We first attempted to implement this project in React, which we are both unfamiliar with. Eventually we realized that going with what we know is a vital strategy when under time constraints.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We're proud of utilizing real world data to populate our demonstration.

What we learned

We've learned about the React environment, even if the project didn't end up being implemented in this way. We gained more insight on project management and learned to divide tasks bases on our strengths and weaknesses.

What's next for Plutos

We hope to expand the features of this web app to include more functions of our original vision.
