Inspiration
We were inspired by other IO Games such as thelast.io, and we wanted to make a pirate spinoff.
What it does
This game is a battle royal with our own twist on a pirate theme. There is one player controlled ship and 32 AI ships that are spawned throughout the scene. The fog closes in and damages player it touches, making everyone clump up and fight. The victor is the last person surviving.
This game also has a ship upgrade system where the player can interact with the HUD to collect coins and upgrade parts of their ship to defeat enemies easily.
How we built it
First, we started off by planning our project and then we made some basic models. Then, we worked on a navigation controller and AI Pathfinding for our map. Afterwards, we made a map with obstacles and a mesh that AI could walk on. Then, we added a combat system and an upgrade system to upgrade the player's ship. We also added coins that spawn across the map that the player can pick up to upgrade. Finally, we finished by adding a HUD and UI along with a menu screen.
Challenges we ran into
One challenge we ran into was with our storm system where our storm would clip into our camera. We spend a long time debugging this, and the solution was to redo our water shader.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are very proud of the project overall and we outworked ourselves and surprised ourselves with the results of a fully completed 3D game in under 48 hours. We hope that the knowledge from this hackathon will carry onto our future competitions or comp. sci. challenges.
What we learned
We collectively as a group expanded our knowledge on the use of the Game engine unity and we also managed to expand our understanding of the C# language which Unity utlitizes to make its magic possible. We also learned color theory, graphic design, UI design, and many other useful skills that are invloved in game development.
What's next for Plundr.io
We plan to add additional enemy types and upgrades, developing this game further and possibly publishing it to a major platform like the Google Play store or itch.io. We would also like to add new game modes to earn a player base and maintain player retention in the case we decide to develop this into an actual .io game.
