Inspiration
Traditional habit trackers and productivity apps rely on guilt-tripping mechanics: break a streak, and your progress dies, creating anxiety instead of motivation. I wanted to rethink this relationship. "Plotline" was inspired by the idea that rest and fluctuating energy shouldn't feel like failure. We set out to design a calm, forgiving, and emotionally intelligent digital space where habits are living plots of land that can "nap" when you're overwhelmed, rather than wither away.
What it does
Plotline is a guilt-free pixel yard designed for tracking goals and habits with empathy:
- The Pixel Yard Interface: Every habit is represented as a corner in your virtual yard.
- Dynamic Emotional Check-in: Instead of rigid binary tracking (done/not done), users can input complex, overlapping emotional states (e.g., feeling both stressed AND bored).
- Adaptive Micro-Adventures: Based on your current emotional bandwidth, Plotline automatically scales your day down into three small, low-pressure, fun adventures instead of overwhelming to-do lists.
- Gentle Habit Napping: Habits can safely "nap" instead of dying, keeping your progress intact and encouraging long-term consistency over punishing streaks.
How we built it
Design & Prototyping: Built with a focus on thoughtful UX, calming color palettes, and intuitive user flows.
- Frontend / UI: Crafted using clean component architecture and responsive layouts to ensure a seamless experience across devices.
Challenges we ran into
Balancing simplicity with emotional nuance was our biggest design hurdle. I wanted to avoid cluttering the interface while still allowing users to express complex, multi-layered feelings. I solved this by creating a streamlined check-in flow that translates emotional input into manageable, bite-sized tasks effortlessly.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
Designing with Empathy First: Crafting a non-punitive habit mechanic where habits "nap" rather than reset or wither, removing the anxiety commonly tied to daily streaks.
- Multi-State Emotional Input UX: Creating a fluid, low-friction check-in flow that gracefully handles complex, overlapping feelings (like being simultaneously stressed and bored) without overwhelming the user.
- Cohesive Pixel Art Visual Identity: Designing a warm, inviting pixel yard aesthetic that feels playful, grounding, and visually distinct from typical sterile corporate productivity tools.
- Built-in Inclusive Design: Integrating high contrast, clear visual cues, and forgiving interactions so that users facing burnout or executive dysfunction feel welcomed and supported.
What we learned
We learned that less is often more in productivity UX. Designing for empathy—allowing grace, rest, and flexibility—creates a much stickier, more beloved user experience than traditional rigid gamification.
What's next for Plotline: a guilt-free pixel yard for your goals
- Expanded Yard Ecosystem: Introducing more seasonal biomes, weather effects that mirror real-time emotional moods, and customizable yard elements.
- Social & Collaborative Yards: Allowing close friends to plant shared habit corners where missed days can be gently "watered" or supported by peers.
- Smart Adaptive Scheduling: Integrating lightweight calendar and wearable sync to automatically suggest low-energy micro-adventures during high-stress days.
- Enhanced Mobile & Cross-Platform Support: Refining tactile haptic feedback and native widgets so users can quickly check in directly from their home screen.
Accessibility & Inclusive Design
Plotline was built with inclusive design at its core, featuring high-contrast visual states, intuitive navigation, and zero judgmental feedback loops. This ensures that users dealing with burnout, neurodivergence, or executive dysfunction can build sustainable habits without anxiety.
