Inspiration

Wellness tools often feel like homework: track another habit, complete another checklist, or fix something about yourself. We wanted to create the opposite—a playful space where people can laugh, experiment, and enjoy technology without pressure.

Plot Twist! was inspired by childhood games where ordinary objects could become part of ridiculous adventures. It also reflects CS Girlies’ vision of making technology feel welcoming, creative, and empowering. Instead of asking players to find the “correct” answer, the game rewards imagination and beautifully bad ideas.

What it does

Plot Twist! is an endless AI-powered storytelling game.

The player receives an absurd problem, such as a ghost stealing the Wi-Fi. They choose exactly three playful stickers to solve it. The AI must then turn those unexpected choices into a funny story consequence and generate the next challenge.

The game includes:

• Endless AI-generated story loops
• Colorful sticker-based gameplay
• Funny verdicts and chaos points
• Story history and unlockable chapters
• Expressive AI narration using Groq Orpheus
• Music, sound effects, and playful interactions
• No login, installation, or personal data collection

There are no wrong answers. The player’s imagination always drives the story.

How we built it

We built Plot Twist! as a full-stack web application using React, TypeScript, Vinext, and Cloudflare Workers.

The game sends the current problem and the player’s three selected stickers to a protected server-side AI endpoint. The AI generates a structured consequence and a new problem, allowing the story to continue indefinitely.

Groq’s Orpheus text-to-speech model provides expressive narration. Long stories are divided into natural speech segments so the narrator can read the complete story, selected sticker names, verdict, and next challenge without cutting anything off.

We created the visual experience with custom CSS, responsive layouts, animated cards, sticker interactions, Web Audio sound effects, and a cheerful synthesized soundtrack. API keys remain protected as server-side secrets and are never exposed in the browser.

Challenges we ran into

Creating an endless game without making it feel repetitive was our biggest design challenge. Each round needed to connect naturally to the previous one while still becoming surprising and funny.

Voice was another challenge. Standard browser voices sounded robotic and weakened the joyful experience we wanted. We switched to Groq Orpheus for warmer, more expressive narration and built a queue that handles complete stories within the model’s text limits.

We also had to balance excitement with usability. The game uses many sounds and animations, but players can independently control the music and narrator.

Finally, we designed the experience to work without accounts or a database. This made the demo instantly accessible while requiring careful client-side state management.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We are proud that Plot Twist! feels like a game rather than a generic AI wrapper.

The player makes the creative decisions, while AI supports their imagination by handling the consequences. Every combination of stickers can create a different story, making the experience replayable without requiring a marketplace, community, or another player.

We are also proud that the application:

• Creates happiness without collecting sensitive wellness data
• Uses technology to encourage curiosity instead of perfection

What we learned

We learned that AI is most enjoyable when it responds to human creativity instead of replacing it.

Small interactions—sounds, sticker animations, surprising verdicts, and playful language—can create more happiness than adding complicated features. We also learned that voice changes how users emotionally experience an application. Expressive narration makes each result feel like a shared joke rather than plain generated text.

Most importantly, we learned that a wellness experience does not always need to measure progress. Sometimes giving someone permission to play, laugh, and be imaginative is valuable on its own.

What's next for Plot Twist!

Next, we would like to add:

• More sticker packs and themed story worlds
• Optional accessibility-friendly sound and motion settings
• Multiple expressive narrator personalities
• A family-friendly classroom mode
• Local story saving without requiring an account
• Shareable illustrated endings
• Cooperative play on one device
• Multilingual stories and narration

Our long-term goal is to make Plot Twist! a small pocket of joyful creativity—a place people can visit whenever they need a playful break.
