Inspiration
We come from an understanding that the traditional American lawn--highly manicured, cut short, no plants-- is inhospitable to local ecosystems and bad for biodiversity. This led us to create a website which encourages users to plant native plants (which are vastly better for ecological health) in a fun and unpredictable way.
What it does
This website displays a randomized group of native plants in New York State along with information to maintain them such as sunlight and water needs.
How we built it
We utilized HTML, JavaScript, and CSS to build this website.
Challenges we ran into
We struggled getting information on native plants from websites without public APIs. A majority of our group has also never built a website before, so even learning HTML, Javascript, and CSS was new for us!
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of building a working website in the first place. In addition, we were happy with the aesthetic touches we added to the website to make it more visually appealing.
What we learned
We learned new languages and learned how to effectively build a website!
What's next for Plantiful
We hope to expand our database to include all 50 states and also hope to allow users to select for certain features and search for plants directly in the website.
