Inspiration
Money is pouring into AI while aid budgets shrink. Foreign aid fell 23.1% in 2025; worldwide AI spending is forecast to reach USD 2.67 trillion in 2026. One percent of that forecast is USD 26.7 billion. OECD, Gartner
We want the AI boom to help fund healthcare, education and opportunity. Pledge makes participation simple: choose a small share, or round up at checkout.
Our focus is SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals—connecting businesses and individuals with charities.
What it does
Companies: Scan a card statement locally, or connect through Plaid when configured. Pledge identifies supported AI charges, lets the company choose a percentage, and creates a monthly pledge record and draft invoice. Non-AI statement transactions stay on the device.
Individuals: Our Chrome extension appears inside OpenRouter’s credit checkout and suggests a CAD round-up. One Yes saves an unfunded pledge. At C$5, the user can separately confirm payment through Stripe.
Our intended first recipient is VGH & UBC Hospital Foundation, followed by a proposed charity rotation.
How we built it
- One Node.js backend, SQLite, a plain HTML/CSS/JavaScript frontend and a Chrome extension.
- Local statement matching and encrypted storage for connected-account tokens.
- Transactional pledge records and verified Stripe sandbox payments.
- 59 automated tests, plus live OpenRouter checkout and Stripe sandbox testing.
Challenges we ran into
Tiny payments, meaningful fees. Charging every round-up separately would consume too much of the gift. We accumulated pledges before requesting payment.
Reliable detection. Bank exports vary, and a provider’s account balance isn’t its checkout total. We tested both statement formats and changing checkout amounts.
Accomplishments that we’re proud of
A working extension inside real OpenRouter checkout, a complete company pledge flow, and a tested payment ledger—all built around a small, voluntary decision.
What we learned
Making giving easy requires careful work behind the scenes: payment costs, financial privacy and charity-approved arrangements.
What’s next
An approved charity pilot, production payment connections, accounting imports and more verified AI checkout integrations.
A note on the demo
Community figures are sample data. Company invoices are drafts, and extension payments use Stripe’s sandbox. No real donations or official tax receipts are issued. All charity arrangements require approval.
