Currently, only 1-in-5 children in the U.S. live within walking distance of a park or playground. Because of this lack of access today’s kids spend less time playing outside than any previous generation. This has created a Play Deficit among children, which is having profound consequences for kids physically as well as mentally and socially. Children desperately need a place to play every day in order to be active and healthy. KaBOOM! is a national non-profit organization dedicated to saving play. For 15 years, KaBOOM! has been fighting this Play Deficit and saving play by ensuring there is a great place to play within walking distance of every child. KaBOOM! recently created a free mobile application called Playgrounds! to help address the Play Deficit by mapping the state of play across America. KaBOOM! is asking families, moms, dads, child care professionals and everyone to join KaBOOM! in a national effort to share and rate every playground in America. People can also find new playgrounds, make playdates, rate existing playgrounds and more with the Playgrounds! mobile application. Since its inception in 1996, KaBOOM! has led volunteers in building more than 2,000 playgrounds across North America. The Playgrounds! mobile application will allow KaBOOM! to not only identify areas where the Play Deficit is most prevalent, but also to address the Play Deficit by assisting communities in increasing play opportunities for children. Features:

Playgrounds! uses your smart phone’s GPS or a zip code to locate playgrounds near you. Use the app to plan playground play dates and share them with friends. Rate the playground, leave a comment, or share pictures for other visitors to see. Become a fan of your favorite playgrounds and share them with your social network. If your favorite playground doesn’t pop up, Playgrounds! makes it easy for you to add it the map. Find fun age-appropriate playground activities for kids and read fun playground trivia.
