Inspiration
Due to COVID-19, obesity rates have escalated drastically as the quarantine provided people across the world high levels of stress and lack of activity. 61% of US adults report that they have gained undesired weight during the COVID-19 pandemic. Outside of physical changes in lifestyles, many have suffered mentally for not being able to work, socialize, and just go outside. There isn’t any concrete information for people to use on staying healthy at home, so our goal is to create an experience that is not only fun but also active.
Here are some of the research we found while looking at the correlation between COVID-19 pandemic and obesity:
- Quarantine provides period of stress as stress links to an increased risk of obesity
- Quarantine also changes eating lifestyle
- According to new APAsurvey, 2/5 of the 3000 surveyed gained more weight than intended over the past year, with an average gain of 29 lb per person. Of such, 10% claimed they gained over 50 lbs.
- “In times of stress, we often engage in unhealthy coping mechanisms like overeating. Many people are ‘emotional eaters’ and eatc comfort food in the context of negative emotions.” - Brittany LeMonda, PhD, senior neuropsychologist at Lenox Hill Hopsital, NY.
- Factors include working from home, constant easy access to kitchen, limited access to gyms, stress, snacking, etc.
- Roughly 40 percent of US adults are obese, which increases risk of COVID-19 due to chronic inflammation, slower immune response, and slower treatment response
- From 150,000 patients that were diagnosed from March to December 2020, half of the patients were obese and at least 28 percent had a high BMI index.
What it does
PlayFIT is a social app that all users can use to connect with others by sending and receiving fitness challenges which is converted into points! If a user is unable to finish a challenge is the timeframe given they will lose points. This is meant to be a fun experience to be healthy while competing with others for prizes.
How we built it
We used Figma to build our prototype.
Challenges we ran into
Initially, we struggled to get our final concept as we were looking at various themes like time management, spending, etc. In the end, we decided to choose active lifestyles as it is prominent in many of our lives today due to the pandemic.
Adding on, since we are all very new to design and product development, it took us a while to get started with the overall design system.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
As a team, we are extremely proud to have finished our prototype and hope to continue to refine it until its usability is very accessible for all types of users. In addition, it was all of our first hackathons, so it was extremely exciting to go through the fast timeline while developing.
What we learned
Spending these two days learning about the proposal-making process and designing functionality, I learned that there are a lot more steps and thoughts needed in order to create even the simplest of programs. I also learned that even the littlest aspects that may seem ignorable, can create the biggest issues, such as color scheme, button placement, etc. Overall, this hackathon's experience was very educational, and in the near future, I will take every detail into account when it comes to designing my own program. Adrian Kim
As Alpha Hacks 2021 was my first ever hackathon, I did not have much to expect from. From these past two and half days of working with my peers, I have realized the commitment and many necessary tools needed in order to synthesize even a simple idea. It has been a very eye-opening experience for a student who has barely dabbled in this field of STEM. The main take away from this competition is that I love this community, and I hope I can participate in the many years ahead, possibly even winning one hackathon myself. Eugene Lee
This was my first hackathon but I enjoyed it a lot as working with others and to make our final product was very educational. It was very rewarding and I hope our team can continue this project to actually release it. The experience was very educational and I hope to participate in any other hackathons to get as much exposure. I am glad that I was able to participate. Teri Chung
What's next for PlayFit
In the end, team E.A.T hopes to continue this project by refining our designs and starts to develop it and potentially test it to ensure that the experience is accessible. Our next steps consist of having a more detailed and flushed out user flow with all the potential interactions that our app provides. Then, we would like to work on going back to our overall design to make it much more intuitive.
