Inspiration
"The seed for this project was planted in my own childhood, navigating the world with undiagnosed social anxiety that made communication a constant struggle. This personal challenge was mirrored in my brother's experience with autism, giving me a profound, dual perspective on the isolation that communication impairments can cause. The initial, anecdotal understanding was confirmed by research. Learned that neurodivergent individuals and those with social anxiety disorder frequently face significant barriers to accessing consistent, affordable, and engaging communication therapy. Traditional methods can feel clinical, intimidating, and repetitive, leading to low adherence.
This realization was the call to action. 'What if i could leverage the motivating principles of gamification—immediate feedback, safe failure, and progressive challenge—to create a supportive environment for practicing communication?' This insight inspired me to build "PlayCee", a tool designed not just as therapy, but as a fun and empowering game that meets users exactly where they are."
What it does
Emotion Mimicry: Players are prompted to speak sentences with specific emotions. The real-time voice analysis provides instant, encouraging feedback on their tone, helping them understand the power of non-verbal cues.
Scenario Trainer: Through interactive dialogues with AI characters, users practice responding to everyday social situations—from accepting a compliment to politely declining an invitation. This builds confidence and social script recognition.
Fluency Builder: Challenge modes, like impromptu storytelling from random images, help users improve their cognitive fluency and reduce anxiety around spontaneous speech.
How it was built
Basic Building Blocks:
HTML - The structure and text
CSS - The colors, layout, and animations
JavaScript - The brain that makes everything work
Special Features:
Microphone Access - So the game can hear you speak
Browser's Built-in Speech Recognition - Turns your speech into text
Simple Scoring System - Gives points and feedback
Challenges faced
Making something technical feel human and caring
Wanted users to feel like they had a patient coach, not a strict judge. Every design decision asked: "Will this make someone feel supported or criticized?"
Accomplishments
"Built a place where it's okay to struggle"
No judgment, no failure messages
Every attempt is celebrated
People can practice without embarrassment
This was the #1 goal and it was achieved!
What was learned
"Modern browsers are powerful!"
You can build advanced apps using just HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
Speech recognition works surprisingly well in browsers
No need for expensive servers for basic functionality
"Simple code can solve complex problems"
You don't need fancy AI to help people
Basic scoring systems can feel smart and responsive
Good design matters more than complex technology
