Inspiration

So why did we make it? All 4 of our team members are athletes who have been playing sports for a while now. We all love everything about them and appreciate everything it does for us. For example it takes our mind of things like schoolwork tests, and tasks that may be due. The only thing we think about in the moment of play is the game; this helps our mental sanity on a daily. Sports has also brought us all together and has helped us make so many amazing friends in the process. At the sametime it helps us stay fit and healthy which is amazing because we are also having so much fun in the process.
We wanted to look more into the idea of high school athletics and started looking into the stats. We saw that there are over 8 million high school athletes just in the US. That's when saw how much potential this app could have. We dug a little deeper and noticed that almost 70 percent of children quit their sport before the age of 13 and a big reason for this is, lack of exposure. This means that coaches have access to only 30 percent of potential talent coming in. The main goal of the app that we started to build today is to reduce this percentage, so that more kids can have the same experience we have had in high school.

What it does

Playbook is a sports focused platform currently designed for high school basketball and volleyball players, with future goals of adding all the sports. It helps athletes track their development, connect with teammates and coaches, and schedule their athletic life. The app uses AI to generate personalized workout plans, match players of similar skill levels and location for gym runs and public tournaments. Users can scout opponents unless they are on private, build a portfolio, and stay organized with shared team and player calendars. The calendar shows reminders and also lets you know about stuff your coaches may have added to the team calendar like practices and games. The overall goal of Playbook is designed to improve athletic performance, increase exposure, and help athletes schedule their athletic lives.

How we built it

We built Playbook using a combination of web development tools and AI technologies. Initially, we explored platforms like Replit, Cursor, and Lovable.dev for hosting and development. We integrated AI to generate workout plans, match players based on skill levels, and recommend YouTube tutorials to help athletes improve. The app uses geolocation for player matchmaking and incorporates features like calendars to enhance team communication. We also incorporated UI for easy navigation. The development process involved overcoming challenges with platform limitations like free trial limitations and optimizing user experience for athletes at every stage.

Challenges we ran into

At first, we tried building Playbook using Replit and GitHub, but they couldn’t support the, experience we wanted. We then looked into Cursor AI, but it didn’t allow us to preview the site properly. Eventually, we found Lovable.dev, which actually worked really well and let us start to bring our vision to life — but we ran out of free credits before we could get a lot done. These challenges pushed us to keep exploring more tools that are more functional and affordable, as we work toward to making Playbook a great platform for athletes.

What we learned

Through building Playbook, we learned that turning an idea into a working product takes flexibility, and creative problem solving. We discovered that not every tool or platform is a perfect fit for our project and sometimes, the hardest part is just finding the right environment to build it in. We learned how important it is to prioritize user experience, especially for athletes who need a clean and fats app design. We also realized the value of testing, getting feedback, and adapting quickly when things don’t go as planned; like switching from platform to platform and managing free credit limits. Overall, this process taught us how to problem solve under pressure, make smart design decisions, and to stay focused on building something that actually helps people.

What's next for Playbook

Our vision for Playbook doesn’t stop at basketball and volleyball — we want to expand the platform to support a wide range of sports, making it a go to app for youth athletes everywhere. While we’re currently focused on high school athletes in the U.S., our goal is to take Playbook global and create a platform where players from any country can grow, connect, and get recruited.
We also plan to add even more AI to make the experience smoother and more personalized for every user. For example, our AI will soon be able to automatically recommend YouTube tutorials based on an athlete’s skill level and goals, which will make it easier for them to improve without endless searching. This way, Playbook becomes not just a networking tool, but also a virtual coach that grows with the athlete. Ultimately, we want to reduce the work on both our end and the user’s, while increasing the impact of every interaction.
