Inspiration

Hi there! I am a UI/UX designer. I have some coding and SwiftUi knowledge. I’m a mum of 6 months old twins. And 2 days ago I realised our little play room was getting full of toys. Since the beginning I always wanted to implement the toy rotation system because of this its amazing benefits for babies and kids. But then I realised It was going to be a little be difficult to keep track of all the toys, storage and rotation days. So I thought well I can build me an app. Turns out that day I got this email from Devpost (Deadline TOMORROW | last minute tips - OpenAI Build Week). I was like omg I missed it! But then I thought oh well might as well try to do it. So here I am a few hours away from the deadline at 10:30pm(edit: I finished at 2 am) typing this (I live in Thailand). Pretty tired and all but I thought it was a great push to actually get going with my app.

What it does

So the app is a toy rotation system app. You add a toy with all of its information: photo, category, skills it helps with, recommended age, storage info and notes. If you don’t have time, are in a hurry or don’t really know much about the toy you can use the AI feature to analyse the photo and fill out the information about it. Then After you have all your toys in the app you can create random rotations where you can pick the amount of toys and days, you can edit all this later. You get notifications when it is time to rotate toys again and you can rate each toy by the engagement the baby had with it. You can also have favourite toys which get a little bit of a boost on the random rotation pick. You have a rotation app with basically a database of all your toys, where they are stored or their unique status. No more guessing! I thought I really needed this because my ADHD would make impossible to ever remember to do a proper rotation.

How I built it

I excel on web and UI/UX design but it takes a long time! Designing a simple project to its perfection takes weeks. So I did a very simple quick (ugly - in my eyes) design and I went with it I asked ChatGPT to help me with a few ideas and then I went to codex to build it. I know more about SwiftUI do I decided to do it for iPhone. Plus I use an iPhone.

Challenges I ran into

Well, challenge number 1 and most important. I didn’t realise there was an Open AI hackathon until 2 days ago. There is not enough time! I wanted to do so much more but time literally was my biggest challenge. **Second I use ChatGPT to help me with some image generation and the image generation is currently down so that has been a problem. **Third being a mum of twins and trying to build an app lol. And last I have never implemented AI on an app before it was my first time it was quite challenging.

Accomplishments that I am proud of

Wow being able to submit this app! I managed to do so much I didn’t think I was able to do. And well building it in just 1 day.

What I learned

I have never added AI to an app so even though I couldnt add it I learned how it is done and I learned that codex is freaking awesome! Omg kudos to all team at openAI and codex.

What's next for Play Shelf

I will redesign it to my liking. I will be using it for myself and if I really love it probably publish it.
