Problem Addressed
At the core of our modern world lies a pressing dilemma: food waste, a challenge with profound sustainability implications. Each year, households discard a staggering 1.3 billion tons of perfectly edible food, deepening global hunger and environmental crises. This problem starts with the neglect of leftovers and overpurchasing, where people often overestimate their food needs.
Introducing "PlateMate," a comprehensive mobile app that tackles food waste with both preventative and retrospective approaches, offering personalized grocery lists to curb overbuying and efficient inventory management to minimize leftover neglect.
By embracing PlateMate, we embark on a journey towards sustainable food consumption, reducing waste and its impact on our planet.
Intended Audience
PlateMate is designed for individuals and households who are committed to reducing food waste while optimizing their food management practices.
It caters to those seeking a convenient and sustainable way to streamline their grocery shopping, manage their food inventory, and discover creative ways to use leftovers.
Whether you're a busy professional, a home cook, or someone concerned about environmental sustainability, PlateMate is tailored to meet the needs of anyone striving for more responsible and efficient food consumption.
How Solution Was Built
We started off by conducting UX research to dictate our app’s human-centered design direction.
With brainstorming using affinity diagrams, crafting a user persona, and mapping a user journey, we delved into the ideation process to conceptualize our application that addresses human waste both preventatively and retrospectively in households.
Finally, we utilized a multidisciplinary approach to mobile app development prototyping with graphic design and UX/UI design on Figma.
Team & Their Roles
The PlateMate team comprises four students from the Philippines, driven by a shared passion for using design and innovation to tackle global challenges. They collaboratively brainstormed and crafted the project's direction.
James Alabin, the CEO, developed PlateMate's core idea and value proposition while also contributing to its design. Dani Peralta, the Design Lead, focused on creating an intuitive user interface. Ronnie Torres and Chill Albasin, both designers, ensured the app's visual appeal and user experience were top-notch.
Together, they formed a dedicated team that brought PlateMate to life as a Figma prototype, offering a holistic, reciprocal solution to combat food waste and promote sustainable food management.
