Over 40% of household food goes to waste. Our app helps you fix that—just snap a photo of your fridge and get smart meal ideas. Finish your food, waste less, and feel good doing it.
Inspiration: Over 40% of household food in the U.S. goes to waste—often because people forget what’s in their fridge or don’t know what to cook with what they have. We wanted to create a solution that helps people waste less food by making meal planning easier and more intuitive. That’s how Plateful_SH402 was born.
What it does: Plateful lets users snap a photo of their ingredients or manually enter them to receive smart recipe suggestions. The app is designed to make the most out of what you already have at home, encouraging better food usage and helping reduce waste. Its clean interface and simple flow make it easy to manage ingredients and discover what’s possible with what’s on hand.
How we built it: We used Next.js and React for the frontend, creating a responsive interface styled with Tailwind CSS and our own design system. The backend runs on Express and MongoDB, allowing us to store and manage ingredient data efficiently. We built modular, reusable components for core features like photo capture, ingredient lists, and recipe suggestions to keep the codebase scalable and clean.
Challenges we ran into
Accomplishments that we're proud of: We’re proud of building a full-stack app with a modern, intuitive UI and a strong foundation for future growth. Even as a minimum viable product, Plateful solves a real problem and offers users genuine value. Integrating camera functionality and building a smooth ingredient management system were major wins for us.
What we learned: We deepened our understanding of full-stack development—from managing component state in React to designing scalable backend routes in Express. We also learned how small design decisions can dramatically affect the user experience. Most importantly, we saw how a simple idea can evolve into a working product that addresses a real-world issue.
What's next for Plateful_SH402: We plan to integrate a recipe API to provide dynamic suggestions and explore image recognition to automatically detect ingredients from photos. Future features include filtering by dietary needs, user accounts to save favorite recipes, and personalized meal planning. Our vision is to turn Plateful into a go-to assistant for smarter, more sustainable cooking.
