💡 Inspiration

Despite growing awareness of climate change and various recycling programs, plastic waste continues to be a major contributor to global warming. The production, degradation, and improper disposal of plastic release harmful greenhouse gases, with emissions projected to double by 2060. While governments and organizations promote recycling, there is no widespread system that makes it engaging, trackable, and rewarding for individuals. This realization led to the creation of PlastiCoin, a mobile app that transforms recycling into a gamified, incentive-based climate solution. By turning plastic waste into digital rewards, PlastiCoin makes recycling easy, accessible, and impactful, encouraging more people to take action against climate change.

♻️ What It Does

PlastiCoin rewards users for recycling plastic waste, making climate action fun and engaging. Users can scan plastic item barcodes or manually enter details, then drop off their waste at verified recycling centers. Once their recycling is verified, they earn PlastiCoins, a digital currency that can be redeemed for eco-friendly products, discounts, or donations to climate initiatives. The app also features challenges, leaderboards, and impact tracking, allowing users to compete, collaborate, and measure their contribution to reducing plastic pollution.

By integrating gamification, digital incentives, and community engagement, PlastiCoin aims to drastically increase recycling participation and lower the carbon footprint associated with plastic waste.

🛠 How We Built It

Our concept for PlastiCoin is built on a deep understanding of recycling behavior, climate science, and incentive-driven engagement models. We researched waste management systems, digital reward platforms, and gamification strategies to create an experience that is both intuitive and motivating.

The UI/UX was designed in Figma, ensuring a seamless and user-friendly interface. The prototype includes fully interactive screens covering scanning, recycling verification, rewards, challenges, and leaderboards, making it a functional demonstration of how the app would work in real life.

🚧 Challenges We Ran Into

One of the biggest challenges was designing a system that balances engagement with environmental impact. Many recycling apps lack clear incentives, and we wanted to ensure that PlastiCoin provides real value while driving behavioral change. Another challenge was creating a user-friendly flow that motivates users without making recycling feel like a chore. Additionally, structuring a scalable rewards system that benefits both users and sustainable businesses requires careful planning.

🏆 Accomplishments That We're Proud Of

We are proud to have developed a functional prototype that makes recycling engaging, accessible, and impactful. By integrating gamification elements, we have created an interactive experience that drives real-world climate action. We also developed a scalable model that can transform everyday recycling into a powerful sustainability movement, proving that technology can drive climate-positive actions at scale.

📚 What We Learned

Throughout this project, we gained a deeper understanding of how plastic waste contributes to climate change and the behavioral psychology behind incentivized action. We explored best practices in UI/UX design, learned how to prototype a sustainability-driven app, and strengthened our skills in ideation, research, and business modeling. Most importantly, we realized that technology alone cannot solve the climate crisis. It must be combined with behavioral change and community-driven initiatives to create a lasting impact.

Many recycling apps only focus on waste tracking without offering real incentives to users. PlastiCoin goes beyond passive tracking by rewarding users, integrating gamification, and partnering with eco-friendly businesses to create a circular economy. Unlike other apps, PlastiCoin:

Our next steps include developing a fully functional app and expanding the rewards ecosystem by partnering with eco-friendly brands and businesses. We also plan to integrate AI-based recycling verification to enhance accuracy and collaborate with local governments for city-wide implementation.

Additionally, we aim to introduce an educational feature that provides bite-sized recycling facts and tips to help users understand the climate impact of plastic waste, best recycling practices, and sustainable alternatives. This will ensure that PlastiCoin rewards recycling and educates and empowers users to adopt more eco-friendly habits.

Our long-term goal is to make PlastiCoin a global sustainability initiative, helping communities worldwide reduce waste, lower carbon footprints, and drive meaningful climate action.
