💡 Inspiration

Plastic waste is a huge problem worldwide. Every year, millions of plastic items end up in landfills and oceans, harming the environment. Many people want to recycle but lack motivation or a proper system to track their efforts. We wanted to create a fun, rewarding, and easy way to encourage people to recycle—so we built PlastiCoins!

♻️ What It Does

PlastiCoin makes recycling rewarding and trackable. Users can scan a plastic item’s barcode or enter details manually, then drop it off at a recycling center. For each recycled item, they earn PlastiCoins, which can be redeemed for eco-friendly products or discounts. The app also includes challenges and leaderboards to make recycling more engaging and fun.

🛠 How We Built It

We designed the UI/UX in Figma to ensure a smooth and intuitive experience. A clickable prototype was created to showcase how the app functions. The workflow was carefully planned, covering key features such as scanning, tracking, rewards, and challenges to make the experience seamless for users.

🚧 Challenges We Ran Into

One of the biggest challenges was ensuring that the navigation flow felt natural and easy to use. We also had to figure out the best way to verify that users had recycled their items. Designing an engaging rewards system that users would find valuable while also being sustainable for the business was another challenge we worked through.

🏆 Accomplishments That We're Proud Of

We are proud of successfully designing a fully working prototype in Figma. The interface is user-friendly, making recycling both simple and engaging. The gamified rewards system we created encourages users to recycle regularly, and we believe this could have a real impact on reducing plastic waste.

📚 What We Learned

Throughout this process, we learned how to design and prototype a mobile app from start to finish. We also realized the importance of user experience (UX) in motivating user behavior. Additionally, we gained valuable insights into how to create an app that balances both social impact and business sustainability.

🚀 What’s Next for PlastiCoins

The next step is to develop the app and fully launch it for real users. We aim to partner with local businesses to provide even more rewards and incentives for recycling. AI-based recycling verification is another feature we plan to integrate for better accuracy.
