Inspiration
Managing a busy day can feel overwhelming. Students and developers often juggle assignments, coding tasks, meetings, and personal priorities without knowing what to tackle first. I wanted to build a productivity assistant that makes planning simpler and helps people turn a long to-do list into a realistic daily plan.
That idea inspired PlanWise AI — Your Day, Thoughtfully Planned.
What it does
PlanWise AI is an AI-powered productivity web application that helps users organize their tasks and plan their day.
Key features include:
- Task management: Create, view, and complete tasks.
- AI productivity assistant: Ask for help organizing priorities using natural language.
- Smart daily scheduling: Generate a structured daily plan around tasks and available time, with breaks.
- Daily overview: See your tasks and progress in one place.
- Practical fallback behavior: Continue using core planning features even when the AI service is unavailable.
How I built it
I built PlanWise AI with a React and Vite frontend, a Python FastAPI backend, and SQLite with SQLAlchemy for data storage.
The frontend provides the task management interface, daily overview, and assistant interaction. The backend handles application logic, task operations, and scheduling. The assistant supports natural-language productivity requests, while the scheduler helps turn priorities into a structured plan.
For this hackathon, I developed PlanWise AI as a simulated Alexa+ experience. It demonstrates how a conversational assistant could help users manage their day, but it is not an official Alexa+ integration.
Challenges I faced
One challenge was bringing task management, conversational assistance, and daily scheduling together in a simple workflow. A useful schedule should be practical and easy to understand, rather than just a list of tasks.
Another challenge was making the application useful even when an external AI service is unavailable. I addressed this with fallback behavior so core productivity workflows remain usable.
I also focused on testing the main user journey, from creating and completing tasks to asking the assistant for help and generating a daily schedule.
What I learned
Building this project helped me bring frontend development, backend APIs, database operations, AI-assisted interactions, and scheduling logic together into one application. I also learned the importance of testing complete user workflows, handling service failures, and clearly communicating the capabilities and limitations of an AI-powered product.
What's next
I would like to improve scheduling personalization, make task prioritization more adaptive, and explore ways to connect conversational planning with supported voice-assistant experiences.
PlanWise AI is my step toward making everyday planning feel more thoughtful, manageable, and less stressful.
