Plantulator

Inspiration

The inspiration was to simulate a chain of events through replicating the natural phenomenon of growth and propagation of seeds into trees and then forests . This inspiration came about from seeing the beautiful greenery at the Durham Campus.

What it does

Our application tries to replicates the natural process involved in the evolution of forests. We considered factors from competition for resources, to effects of environmental factors such as sun light intensity, humidity and amount of rainfall.

How we built it

The project was developed using java, utilising java swing api.

Challenges we ran into

Different plants respond to different factors differently, so keeping track of each plant and updating the growth rate was really challenging. Also modelling the complex interactions between different plants was tasking.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Firstly, we finished out project. That in itself is a massive achievement.

What we learned

Most of the group do not have experience with java and everyone was able to contribute to the project. Proper planning ensured we were able to finish our project before schedule.
