Inspiration
We are students from the University of Calgary. We just finished our 3rd year of Software Engineering and we are interested in learning about UI/UX design to create better applications.
Hydroponics is a sustainable farming technique, which can both use less land and produce better yields compared to traditional farming.
With the assumption that DropLit Laboratories is managing commercial, large-scale hydroponics systems, we decided to design a hydroponics management desktop/laptop application. We assumed that computers would be used to manage more hydroponics systems as opposed to using smartphones or tablets, since computers can do more, and a computer application can provide more functionality to the user on one screen.
What it does
We created a user-friendly and intuitive interface for a hydroponics system that displays system data, including:
- temperature
- pH level
- water level
In addition, the interface provides a centralized control where the user can manage their heaters, pumps, and other equipment.
This application is designed to be accessed on-site or remotely. There is a live feed that streams video from cameras inside the hydroponics farm.
How we built it
We used Figma to built our prototype. We started by designing the dashboard or homepage of the application in high fidelity followed by the graphs page and the live feed page. For our low fidelity flow we created screens with little to no detail where we only displayed the layout of each page and the information that it would include in the final design.

What we learned
As this was the first time for the both of us using Figma, we were able to explore and learn how to use this tool for UI/UX design, from selecting a frame to creating and styling elements for the different pages in the application. Finally, we learned how to add animations and create a prototype to show the flow that the application would have.
