Inspiration:

PlantHunt was inspired by our team's shared passion for travel and nature. We realized that as we were out hiking so much, we were always surrounded by unidentified plants, trees and flowers. This fueled our desire to create a tool that would make it easier for people to identify and learn about the flora around them.

What it does:

PlantHunt is an app that uses image classification to identify plants and classify them based on their species, family, and other characteristics. Users can simply take a photo of a plant they want to identify, and the app will quickly provide them with the scientific name of the plant and add the plant to the user's “Collection”. The app also allows users to view their collection of plants they have come across so far. Users can also go on “Adventures” with their friends and compete to find the most types of plants while they are out on their hikes or are at a park.

How we built it:

We built PlantHunt using a tensorflow image classification model to identify plants and used FireBase to build the app's backend, and React-Native for its frontend.

Challenges we ran into:

One of the biggest challenges we faced was getting the model to work within the app itself. While we were able to take photos with our app, the app was not returning desirable output for the type of plant that the model classified. We also initially had App Write for the app’s backend, but we ran into problems linking the front-end with the App Write hosted backend. Accomplishments that we're proud of: We are proud to have created a functional prototype of PlantHunt that is capable of showcasing the proof of concept of the app we envisioned. We also received positive feedback from our friends who found the app idea to be cool and helpful. Additionally, we were able to code out an amazing app in just a day.

What we learned:

Through the development of PlantHunt, we gained a deeper understanding of front-end work, database management, and classification models. We also learned the names of a lot of new plants we had never seen before. Additionally, we also learned to collaborate and work together with each other while building this app.

What's next for PlantHunt:

Our next goal for PlantHunt is to expand its database of plants to include even more species from around the world. We also plan to add new features such as having a description of the plants identified. Ultimately, our vision for PlantHunt is to become the app that revolutionizes the way we learn about the natural world – in a fun and engaging way.
