Inspirations

Healthy plants are vital to human and animal health. Plants provide over 80% of food consumed by humans and serve as the primary source of nutrition for livestock. Threats to plant health are currently a critical challenge to the global population, their health, productivity, and prosperity. Working on the problem of plant health and sustainability motivated our team to find innovative ways to leverage the power of AI -- and the idea of PlantGuard was born.

What it does

PlantGuard is a website that uses AI to identify and provide a solution for your diseased plant. Furthermore not only does it protect your plants but it provides you with the correct information to help nurture your plant back to health. Features include Image Recognition and Analysis where PlantGuard analyzes images or live videos of plants and identifies whether the plant is infected. There is also a Disease Detector which identifies and categorizes analyzed plant data into various disease classifications. Another feature incorporated into PlantGuard is an Interactive Chatbot. This platform allows our users to gain additional knowledge on ways to treat identified infections.

How we built it

Once we formulated the goals for the solution, we started out collecting ideas to address the problem and developed the framework for the web application that would integrate user interaction. We used Glitch as a tool to develop the website and updated stylesheets and scripts to fine-tune our product branding. Glitch is an open web and remix framework that gives fast, fun tools for content developers and professionals to develop web applications.

Challenges we faced

As middle schoolers with very little exposure to AI concepts and tools, this hackathon was a steep learning curve that challenged us to build a solution in 3 days. The time management needed for the deliverable and identifying the strengths of each of our team members to quickly build the solution was one of the first challenges we tackled. We had to do this while learning these new tools and a programming language in parallel.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Our team is incredibly proud to have developed a fully functional web app from scratch in just two days, despite having no prior coding or web development experience. We rapidly acquired new coding skills, successfully integrated AI capabilities, and leveraged innovative tools like Glitch and Teachable Machine to bring our vision to life.

What we learned

The experience proved to be a very enlightening experience for each of us, as we developed better technical skills, quick collaboration, and deliverable planning. It was an introductory experience for each of us into the world of AI/ML solutions and we strongly feel it laid the foundation that motivates us to engage in future hackathons in this space.

What's next for Project PlantGuard

The next phase of the PlantGuard project involves expanding the AI's capabilities to encompass a broader range of plant species. Currently, the image recognition AI is limited to tomato leaf disease identification; however, we intend to extend its functionalities to include all plant varieties.

I played an instrumental role in the conceptualization and creation of this project through planning and organizing the visual appeal and layout of the website to
introduce a user-friendly environment and help retain attention while accessing the platform, on which I also single-handedly designed the logo of PlantGuard. Additionally, I contributed to the functional aspects of this project through the fine-tuning and testing of an OpenAI bot which guides users to nurture their plants with a higher level of efficiency, and provide them with this information in a more accessible manner. I also was involved in the process of testing the Teachable Machine model, and ensured that the model was able to effectively identify the state of a tomato plant through image recognition to help users analyze the state of their plants. As well as helping with the bots, I also participated in creating and writing the content seen in the final submission form for our project.

I developed the website's database using the HTML and CSS codes, ensuring a seamless and functional interface. In addition, I contributed to the AI chatbot integrated into our project, which allows farmers to ask questions and address concerns about their crops. I also played a pivotal role in testing a Teachable Machine model designed to assist farmers in identifying plant viruses, supporting their efforts to maintain healthy crops. Furthermore, I enhanced the project's visual appeal by selecting the most appropriate images for the website.

I contributed by brainstorming purposeful ideas for the project where AI can make a difference in the environment.
When brainstorming I collaborated on functional discussions for future improvement. Noting this was our first time using glitch, but having some experience with coding I was able to take the initiative to lead. I also contributed to the backend validation of the teachable machine model and functionality of the open AI chatbot. I helped author website content and updated component aesthetics to improve the overall appearance of this project. I also led certain branding aspects such as the slogan. Lastly I contributed to the final submission content.

Maroon Cat
As a key contributor to PlantGuard, I played a pivotal role in developing the core image recognition model. Leveraging Teachable Machine, I curated datasets, trained and optimized the AI, and integrated the model into the application. This is the main part of this and helps farmers and gardeners flawlessly figure out what disease there tomatoes have. I also spearheaded content development, designing the informative impact section and enhancing user experience through the "upload your photos" feature. By fostering a collaborative environment and providing consistent support, we successfully achieved project milestones. I was an active helper to Sri in helping the OpenAI chat bot. I helped test it and make sure it was working and looked nice. Additionally, I refined the project's overall presentation through meticulous content editing (through css and html), and strategic visual enhancements.

Aarna Prasad
I refined the color scheme for our website's title, ensuring it aligns with the overall aesthetic of the PlantGuard project. I also made some code adjustments, fixing minor errors, and brainstormed ideas for the project description. My contributions spanned both the visual design and the foundational framework of the website.
