Inspiration
My main inspiration was Duolingo. At first, I wanted to make a website similar to Leetcode but for CSS, although I realized that I probably wouldn't have time so I switched to a nature learning website.
What it does
It teaches you about different types of plants and other environmental aspects, such as climate change. There are lessons that you can read and then short questions based on the content read.
How we built it
I used php for backend and mySQL for the database. I did the coding and my teammate did all the design and UI. All code is on the github repo.
Challenges we ran into
I spent a while trying to integrade OpenAI API into the project. I wanted to have a chatbot where you could ask nature/botany related questions to but I ran out of time. This was also the first time I've used PHP and the second project I've made involving backend so I spend the first few days watching youtube tutorials and testing stuff.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We are proud of the design and the quizzes. Both took a while to finish so it was satisfying to see them complete.
What we learned
We learned how to plan for a hackathon. Initially, we just came up with general ideas for features but, over time, we realized that it's better to break each feature into lists of steps and be more concise.
What's next for Planted
I plan on adding more categories and making the database more secure. I don't know much about cyber security so I'm going to spend some time learning about it after this hackathon.
