According to a 2021 National Gardening Association study, 42% of gardeners increased their gardening activities due to the Covid pandemic, while only 9% gardened less. As a society, we have grown to embrace gardening as a hobby, but with a severe lack of home education and understanding, this can lead to lots of eager gardeners with mistreated plants.

Introducing: PlantCare. For the People.

What it does

PlantCare is an application that allows the user to send in a picture of their plant, and is then shown the plants species and how they can best treat and care for their loved plant.

How we built it

For this project we used a multitude of different technologies and codebases. We used react.js, JavaScript and html and css for the front end component. We then utilized AI and machine learning, using a dataset of different plants and their care schedules to make this app accessible to all. We also used Figma to design our website, while using GitHub to store our repository.

Challenges we ran into

Building using datasets come with many challenges. For one, we spent hours trying to work with Arc-GIS, but after realizing its incompatibility with most languages without unneeded optimization, we took a different route. Identifying how we would implement separate steps for multitudes of different plants while also outputting species names was also a challenge we worked on heavily, before making a system that ran on two different data sets which optimized our project.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

After working nonstop, we loved how the projects aesthetics and function turned out. This truly is a project we will use in the future (mainly for our non-tech savvy parents who could now easily grow the gardens they've slowly developed).

What we learned

We learned a lot about AI and how using different data sets and training neural networks worked, and this was a first step in this field for everyone on our team.

What's next for PlantCare.

In the future, we would also want to extend this on to fungi, and animal food - for animal food, we would mention how healthy the food was for the specified animal, and what suggestions we had for alternative options.
