Inspiration

It’s no big secret that the environment is in shambles. But people need a reminder that this is indeed the case, and every choice they make affects the world we live in.

What it does

Our project monitors the “health” of a sensitive plant using multiple sensors (temp, humidity, etc.). When these conditions become unacceptable for our little plant baby, he whines and cries and gets angry. It’s a critique of our environment, which suffers, but silently. Deforestation and climate change are very real, but compared to our daily lives, they take the backseat. But your lifestyle- the way you live, eat, play- affects our environment. Plantbaby is a reminder of this: the environment is wailing in distress, and you can be more environmentally conscious in the way you go about life.

How we built it

Arduino code for the sensors, Swift for an app that has the plant baby’s face and emotions. App gets live data from the Arduino, and determines how “healthy” the baby is.

Challenges we ran into

3D printing was really hard, so we ended up using cardboard and tape to make our chassis instead of the CAD that we designed.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

Integrating Arduino live data into an iPhone app was a first-time for us, and was super cool.

What we learned

A lot about Bluetooth communication protocols!

What's next for PlantBaby

This isn’t exactly a product- more of a statement/art piece, so we don’t plan on taking this to the market. We hope the message we are trying to get across makes its way to as many people as possible
