Inspiration

We all want to eat healthier, but it’s not always easy. Fresh produce can be expensive, difficult to find, or simply confusing to select at the store due to its complex labels and hidden ingredients. We realized that healthy eating shouldn't be overwhelming, so we set out to make it simple by helping people grow their food, tailored to their specific needs and local environment.

What it does

Plantable is a personalized gardening and nutrition platform. Users input their region, climate, and time commitment, and the website generates a list of crops that thrive in their local area. It provides growing instructions, nutritional benefits, and easy recipes to support healthier lifestyles.

How we built it

We built Plantable with React.js for the frontend, Bootstrap for responsive design, and Node.js/Express.js for the backend. We developed a custom crop database, enriched with climate, nutrition, and growing data. Our biology major led the curation of health content and the design of the user experience.

Challenges we ran into

We faced challenges in integrating scientific accuracy with user-friendly design, ensuring the accuracy of climate and nutrition data, and making the website intuitive for users with no gardening experience. Balancing technical buildout with rich, accessible content was a key hurdle.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

We’re proud of building a fully functional, user-centered website from scratch that merges biological expertise with web development. We created a solution that is accessible, scalable, and supports preventive healthcare, especially for underserved communities.

What we learned

We learned how powerful interdisciplinary collaboration can be. Combining biology, computer science, and data science allowed us to create a much stronger product. We also gained experience in balancing technical functionality with community health needs and design thinking.

What's next for Plantable

We’re excited to keep growing Plantable by adding new features to make it even more helpful. We aim to integrate a planting calendar that provides reminders tailored to the user’s local season, a tool that assists users in planning small-space gardens such as balconies or windowsills, and a forum where users can share tips and track their progress. We also plan to add filters for dietary needs, such as low-sodium or high-protein options, and eventually develop a mobile app to make Plantable even more accessible on the go.
