Inspiration

Deforestation is occurring at a faster rate than ever before and the effects on the climate are becoming more severe. As trees are crucial to many industries, we aim to work with companies and agricultural managers towards a more sustainable future. We will ensure that for every tree cut down, two more trees will be planted in its place.

What it does

Plant With Us collects user information about the trees they want to cut and gives feedback on the kind of tree they should plant depending on the climate of their current location.

How we built it

We used HTML, CSS, Bootstrap, Javascript, and React. The form collecting user information was made through javascript.

Challenges we ran into

We had to figure out how to seamlessly integrate branches of code back into the main code without creating bugs. We also experimented with implementing a Qoom login functionality, which did not work yet but will be included in future iterations.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

This was the first hackathon for Mike and Sharad, where they had to learn the ropes of how to make an MVP and pitch in a limited time frame. We were able to write clean structured code that other teammates could understand and improve on, which was something that made collaboration much easier.

What we learned

Over the course of the hackathon, we learned how to communicate in a virtual team setting while in different time zones. We did a lot of research on CSS styles and how to create an aesthetically pleasing UX/UI.

What's next for Plant With Us (PWU)

We plan to implement a geolocation API where it will request the location of the user as an alternative to filling out information. We also want to create a bot that will send a confirmation email to the user after submitting. Other aspects of the web app we hope to include are a blog section where users can ask questions and interact with other users of PWU, and create a link to where donations are accepted. Funding will give us the freedom to hire teams for tree planting and reach our goal of cooperating with industries.
