🌱 Inspiration
The idea for Plant Panic: The Balancing Act came from a mix of stress, gaming, and caring for my real-life houseplant. I wanted to capture the emotional rollercoaster of nurturing something that is surprisingly delicate — much like our habits in life. The challenge was to turn something as simple as sun and water into a chaotic, skill-testing experience.
It’s a metaphor for modern life: too much or too little, and everything falls apart. Finding that sweet spot is where the game — and life — thrives.
🌞 What it does
Plant Panic is a minimalist, reflex-based survival game where the player must balance two essential life forces: water and sunlight. You click and hold the ☀️ or 💧 to keep your plant alive — but don’t overdo it! Random weather events like heatwaves or rainstorms shake things up every few seconds.
Your only goal? Keep your plant alive for as long as possible. Every second survived becomes your score.
🛠️ How we built it
We built the game using:
- HTML5 Canvas + JavaScript for the core game engine and animation.
- CSS for styling and responsive layouts.
- Figma to design the pixel-style UI with a calming yet chaotic theme.
- Netlify for easy deployment (eligible for the Deploy Challenge).
- Used vanilla JS to emphasize simplicity and accessibility — no frameworks, just browser magic.
The game logic revolves around:
- Bar systems for water and sun
- Interval timers for decay
- Random event generators
- Game-over triggers and conditionals
🧱 Challenges we ran into
- 🔁 Balancing decay and refill rates was tricky — the game was either too easy or ended instantly.
- ⚠️ Making weather events feel random but fair required lots of testing and tweaking.
- 🧪 Testing across multiple devices to ensure mobile responsiveness.
- 💡 Keeping the game simple, but challenging enough to be fun.
