Inspiration
Agriculture is the backbone of many economies, yet plant diseases can severely impact crop yield and farmer income. Inspired by the need to support farmers and promote smarter farming practices, we developed an AI-powered web app to detect plant diseases early and accurately using image analysis.
What it does
The Plant Disease Detection Web App allows users to upload images of affected plants. The app then analyzes the image using a trained AI model and identifies the type of disease (if any), along with suggestions for treatment or care.
How we built it
Frontend: Built using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and React.js for a responsive UI. Backend: Python with Flask/Django to handle image processing and prediction. Model: Trained a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) using TensorFlow/Keras on a labeled dataset of plant diseases. Deployment: Hosted the app using Vercel for frontend and PythonAnywhere/Heroku for backend APIs. Image Handling: Integrated image preprocessing techniques to enhance accuracy.
Challenges we ran into
Finding a high-quality and balanced dataset for training the model. Ensuring accurate predictions despite image quality and lighting variations. Deploying the full-stack web app with model integration in a limited resource environment. Accomplishments that we're proud of Successfully trained and integrated an AI model for real-time predictions. Built a fully functional, user-friendly web application. Enabled a meaningful solution that can assist farmers and agricultural researchers.
What we learned
How to prepare and augment datasets for better model accuracy. Full-stack integration with ML models. Deployment strategies and handling model loading in production environments.
What's next for Plant Disease Detection Web App
Add support for more plant species and diseases. Introduce multilingual support for wider accessibility. Implement a community-driven section for farmers to share remedies and experiences. Develop a mobile app version for offline use.
