Inspiration
We took inspiration from trivia web-based games like Krillion.io as it takes a simple concept but executes it well through visually satisfying graphics. Since the theme of our game is based off our planet, we drew inspiration from universe sandbox with their unique, interactive elements through customizing their very own universe.
What it does
PlanitEarth prompts the user with various questions regarding their environmentally impacting habits, such as what type of transportation they use and how often the buy single-use plastic. After the user inputs their answers, the game demonstrates their habits through a redesigned earth that represents what our planet could look like if everyone made the same decisions as them. We aim to inform users regarding their impact on their environment and hopefully encourage them to be more eco-conscious.
How we built it
The application consists of a backend made of the Python programming language with FastAPI, which serves the frontend written using Svelte and TypeScript. We and designed all assets and storyboard within Figma, with our pitch video edited using After Effects.
Challenges we ran into
A significant technical challenge was discovering the most effective way to animate and give life to assets. something that the team has never done before.
Accomplishments that we're proud of
We're proud that we were able to brainstorm our concept early during the event, which in hindsight provided us with more time to spend on the technical challenges that came with animating our own assets.
What we learned
This was the first time half of our teammates have participated in a hackathon. With 2 designers and 2 developers, we learned that communicated our ideas effectively would have saved a lot of time, as many ideas and executions got lost in translation from the designer mindset to developer.
What's next for PlanItEarth
PlanItEarth has potential to scale in terms of questions and visual graphics provided to the user. We hope to add more questions to the game, so that it could further highlight how people impact the environment and provide stronger recommendations for them.
