Inspiration

As we realized that a large group of people struggle with saving money and managing a healthy account balance, we identified gamification as a promising opportunity in the finance sector. As we thought on how to gamify finances, we thought of Tamagotchi, a game consisting on a virtual mascot that users feed and take care of. From this game, we had the idea of developing a game in which users grow their planets and planetary system by achieving their finance goals.

What it does

The game was developed as a web app that connects with each user's bank accounts in order to recommend goals and track the completion of goals set by the user. The web app allows the user to customize their goals, track their planet's growth and interact with friends. As the user completes 10 specific goals, their planet evolves and eventually reaches full development. Once fully grown, it is saved to the user's planetary system. As well as individual goals, users can set community goals with friends. For example, if a group of friends want to save money for a trip to Marruecos, they can set this as a community goal and track their progress towards the goal. In addition, users receive rewards for every planet they complete. The connected bank may reward the user with higher interest rates on their savings account, lower loan rates, exclusive rewards or others.

How we built it

First, we built the user interface with Figma, which helped us have an idea of how the user would experience the web app. From there, we started coding the back end and front end with React, Vite, Express. Node.js and MongoDB. When coding, we used the API provided by Capital One to use customer information.

Challenges we ran into

As always, bugs are part of the life of a coder. Also, establishing the connection between mongodb and the front end was a challenge. In addition, implementing libraries to make the web app look nicer was tough.

Accomplishments that we're proud of

For most of the team, this was our first hackathon and the experience taught us a lot. We’re proud of the final user interface that was developed since we find it very appealing.

What we learned

We learned to recognize our weaknesses and strengths, and divide work accordingly. Besides, we learned about software development on the go. All teammates learned something new and implemented new tools to their coding.

What's next for Planetary Capital

For the future, Planetary Capital will use a great percentage of the earnings to combat global issues such as climate change. Besides, we plan to incorporate the fight against global issues to the rewards system of the app. For example, in the future, each time a user completes a planet, a donation will be made.
