Inspiration
We were inspired by the idea of exploring weight variation across different planets in our solar system. This concept ignited our curiosity about the gravitational forces that influence an object's weight and how these vary depending on where you are in the universe.
What It Does
Cosmic Scale is a tool that calculates your weight on different planets, moons, and other celestial bodies. By inputting your Earth weight, the tool uses the gravitational data of each planet to give you an accurate measurement of how much you would weigh if you were standing on a different planet.
How We Built It
We built Planet Weights using a simple yet powerful algorithm that converts Earth weights into planetary weights based on gravity. The application is built in html and css, with a user-friendly interface that allows individuals to easily select their celestial body of choice and input their weight.
Challenges We Ran Into
One of the main challenges we faced was accurately gathering the necessary gravitational data for less-known moons and exoplanets. Additionally, we had to ensure that the tool worked seamlessly across different devices and browsers, which involved rigorous testing and adjustments.
Accomplishments That We're Proud Of
We’re particularly proud of the accuracy and user experience of the tool. Despite its simplicity, it provides detailed, real-time calculations that allow users to visualize their weight in space. We also created an accessible web-based version that anyone can use, helping people learn more about gravity in an engaging way.
What We Learned
Throughout the development of Cosmic Scale, we learned how to gather and apply astronomical data to create an interactive educational tool. We also gained a deeper understanding of gravity's role in the universe, and how even small variations can have a significant impact on an object’s weight.
What's Next for Cosmic Scale
In the future, we plan to expand the tool to include additional celestial bodies, such as dwarf planets and asteroids. We also hope to integrate more advanced features, like visualizations of how different environments would affect your body, and a comparison of how weight influences things like athletic performance or daily activities on other planets.
